Doesn't need a new exhaust, I only said that because a loud 5 pot is awesome
You'll always be tempted to spend with an S2, especially on this forum, but it does put a smile on your face and it is a handsome looking car in a lovely colour
TBH, unless you get one of the really sorted ones that rarely come up, you're going to have to spend a few quid to get it working right, easily throw £2-3k at it over the first year or two. Even a sorted one will have niggles. Standard cars are tempting to a first time buyer but something that's had the weak points sorted is a much better way to go, financially. Of course, you're always going to have to trust the people who have done the work...
Daily? You must be a sucker for punishment. 18-22mpg hurts... You can run a cheap car for the fuel savings on a 10k a year mileage. I get 15 in town and gave up trying to get any real economy years ago.
Remap is essential (!), it'll transform the car - Rustynut may have some Homefries chips for sale soon enough - they're a very good upgrade on a standard car and are tried and tested by many, many people. Otherwise, prj is your man for a custom remap to match the new exhaust, IC, silicon boost hoses...

Speaking of (!), reminding me of the possible brake warning light that you shouldn't be afraid of
I do manage 26mpg in Malta with mixed driving, if it's a well sorted coupe with a good service, new spark plugs (everything makes a difference) you can average at least 25mpg .
I spent roughly 1.5k on mandatory parts i.e. basic service, plugs, coil pack conversion, diff seals, radiator, cv boots, clutch kit, brake pads etc in my first year of ownership, but other than that it's been a solid and reliable car.
The rest of the money you spend will be on useless rubbish like ARBs, aircon (you don't need it in the UK ), rims and other toys here and there

I know I dont like doing things the easy way. I have had a 996 and / or a boxster for the last 10 years so I didnt think the mpg would be that different. I did think Id be better off saving the money I lost on depreciation on getting a S2 and looking after it. Having not had one Im just guessing of course :-).
The homefry / remap - does that make the engine more efficient also in the same way it does with diesels?

I used to get around 32 in my old 10v coupe and I had to drive it hard as it didnt have as much grunt as I was used to. I thought the 20v and turbo would be a bit worse but not much. Again having never owned one Im surmising. I do have a light foot for 90% of my journeys its the last 3 miles before home I like to push a bit (twisty roads). The rest of the time I sit in the stream with everyone else and listen to whatever rubbish is on the radio :-)
They'll be bored senseless until you take them for a run, then they'll just think you're unhinged I was a passenger in my car the other month and from the left seat, it's fairly indecent.

Funny that it always feels slower when your driving. My wife hated my Boxster. I suspect though she hated my driving:-).
Im convincing her the S2 is much more understated (TRUE) and more comfortable (TRUE) and er not as quick (woops a fib).
Not sure about the blue car now. One of the forum members has had a look at it and kindly gave me the heads up re the colour and condition. Its purple and not in the condition youd expect for a lowish miles car.
Ill give it some thought but I might skip this one and try searching again.
Could someone perhaps let me have an example of a valid VIN number please? Ive just received one from the owner and its only 11 chars not 17 as I was expecting....
This car has been up for sale quite alot (using the same pic) the last year or so. Not saying it is a problem car but for the year, price and mileage, I would think it should have sold by now. I think it was up for £5k and now appears to have dropped. Probably better off trying to buy a forum members car who has completed the type of work that turns these machines into a proper handful. Would offer you mine but I am totally addicted to it. I wouldn't use one for a daily as there are so many better cars to pootle about in. From an understated powerful, affordable toy point of view, you probably cannot get much better other than a chavvy Scoob/Evo. They are ten a penny though and you can hear them coming from a mile off. Stick with a well sourced S2, dont cane it by putting unnecessary daily miles on it and enjoy it when the roads are more empty is what my tuppence worth says.
