    Insurance madness

    Hi folks!

Top marks for anyone who can crack this code:

I've just moved to the UK from Ireland and was hoping to get my hands on an ABY Coupe for a decent driving experience! I'm looking at a Cat D at the moment and heres where the problem starts.. The combination of me not having an UK insurance history + a Cat D + the fact I'm 22 means the lowest quote for insurance I've gotten is 15 grand! I was hoping for something along the lines of 1500! I've got 5 years no claims so I thought I'd have some chance..but 15K..I could never justify that..even for an S2

Anyone have any ideas on how to get a half reasonable quote or am I just being dilusional!?

    Cheers!

Whoa, that is ridiculous. Have you tried classic car insurers? Good luck with it. They are great cars but deffo not worth a £15k policy when you consider you could smash it up the first corner you come to.

Try some of the specialists, S2s are normally cheap to insure on the whole

The quote I got was from Adrian Flux - I think they're specialist. Can anyone name some of the others to try, or even the classic car companies?

        Cheers

That's crazy...surely if you have proof of no claims from your previous insurer that should count for you. You've probably tried them already but I can't fault Elephant. Good luck.

I would do a confused.com quote and see what comes back. At 23 I insured an S2 for 1200, with 3 years driving in US/Canada on a UK license, so zero NCB. That was 7yrs ago though!

I would also rate Elephant. When my renewal came through this year, it had dropped over £140. It is now nearly less than £200 a year (not that you want to hear that ha ha) It is on a limited 4k mileage though. It is not my daily, kept in garage but has alot of upgrades. You are not 25 yet but I would still expect you to find a quote for less than £1500. Have you tried doing a quote on a car that doesn't have a Cat D rating just out of interest?

I was paying about £1200 for a cat c S2 with Admiral when I was 20, less than 4 years ago. After a couple of years it dropped to £450 stock, or £600 with all mods declared.

I wouldn't have thought the Cat status makes any odd's to be honest, I've had a few ex write off's over the years and it's never made a blind bit of difference to my quotes whether I declared that or not. So I doubt that's anything to do with that ridiculous quote, I mean 15K is just silly.

I have to ask is your current postcode in the heart of St Pauls, Moss-side or somewhere else very dodgy?

Try a search for 'classic insurance', I insure a couple of my cars this way, it can be a whole lot cheaper than a normal policy.

It always amazes me how expensive insurance is in UK!
For my 1993 s2 i just paid the other day 95£ for one year of insurance.

My S4 is due for renewal, privlidge sent me the automatic renewal letter at £448, but using confused.com, privilege quoted me £301 for the same policy with the same info... WTF? I think I will be leaving them anyway on principle now...

                            Have you tried confused.com?

BTW, is the Cat D coupe the one in Milton Keynes, up for £3K on piston heads now?
