Going from a massive pool of experience these are the items i would normally recommend to my customers.
If doing a road car i wouldnt go for je's I would use wossners if staying below 700hp as higher silicon content and oem offset wrist pins mean a much quieter engine at the sacrifice of only a little power if any depending on the power bracket. If staying below 550hp I'd stick with stock pistonsand just uprate rods if on a budget and lower compression through the headgasket.
Next you'll want rifle drilled hbeam rods for longevity on the small end bush.
mains bearings thrust and sputter big ends from kolbe schmidt
bottom end conversion set and headset from victor reinz/elring as no longer main dealer items
Timing belt stuff gsf as again no longer main dealer available.
If going over 400hp you want arp headstuds as stock won't hold it.
Going over 500hp upgrade stock mains to arp too although stock has been known to hold 600+ for piece of mind and little cost not worth not too.
if going below 400 I would use headbolts from main dealer only but wouldnt waste money on rods and pistons.
core plugs the rule is unless rotten through or in very bad condition dont remove and change them. As they are more likely to pop out once fresh ones are fitted. Also they are in very short supply nowadays I remember 4yrs ago buying up all the old stock from my local motorfactors.
water pump again I'd get of gsf
oil pumps are main dealer only and a fortune. So usually I strip inspect clearance and recondition the original pump for my customers where possible.
you'd also need new crank bellt pulley from main dealer, if a 3b the main bolt is no longer available so you have to reuse so when torquing up if it doesnt make the required poundage because it is stretching it's best to throw the bolt and modify an aby bolt to do the job.
you'll also need new allen key bolts for the dampener and new flywheel bolts. Both main dealer.
Lastly as the I5 engine is an externally balanced percentage based rotating assembly if you are changing rods and pistons you will need to rebalance.
think that's most of it.UrS6 Stroker + HTA3586 =

thanks for your addvise. a lot of the internal parts i already have , the crank light weight knife edge, arrow rods. pistons i still req , head already flowed . im changing from aby iron to alloy engine block its never been used before, it needs core plugs [i assume they are same as iron block core plugs] the block didnt even have all the oil ways drilled ,thats all been done over the last few months incl making a new set of mains caps , the engine will be a max of 340bhp and used in the rally car fitted with a restrictorComment

From memory it save about 20kg, but it's not worth it, the ally block are garbage, just not stable enough, during the rallying hay day Audi replaced all the road cars with ally blocks under warranty with cast iron blocks. This was done so they had enough ally blocks to get them through the rallying
as they were so crap.
Seriously not worth it at all the, I5 with cast iron block = excellent reliability / longevity, I5 with alloy block destroys itself in no time.
The modern alloy blocks are a different story and are good to go, if you want the weight saving get
an 07k .Comment

thanks andy 10v, sure you can ask the weight of the alloy and iron block , im obsessed with saving weight
a bare 20v aby block is 50kg the alloy blocks are 25kg but can be a bit less , i had another one [ late gary midwinters old block] that was only 23kg ,there are a few diffences in the alloy blocks castings over the few years they were made

alloy v iron
driften jo, the alloy blocks were made for one reason as we all know thats all part of our cars history, you are correct audi did fit the alloy blocks in all the sport quattros and poss several 100 road going audis , even been known to turn up fitted to old audi taxis, they had to produce at least 200 for the rally rules homologation they were not as bad as you make out, most quattro sports still have them fitted and any race engine needs regular strip downs . you are correct a iron block is very strong but as i want the alloy block for the same reason audi did ,its a must have item for me. just look at club and national rallying now a days all the top mk2 escorts run alloy blocks from millington £20k and they need constant attention but im in it to win it just like they are . we came 1st in class last year in the acsmc tarmac championship [went to brooklands museum last week to collect it
], im now taking time out to mod the car . target 50kg lighter also dialynx are fitting m800 motec. my aim is to win a few rallys in the next year and im sure a saving of 25kg for rallying being timed at 10ths of seconds could well be just what it takes , just like audi did
Just saying alloy blocks are crap is just like saying BDA [escort RS1600/RS1800 ] and BDG RS200 engine are all crap but they werent made to last for ever , just to win races thats all

Hi A1,
Thank you for the answer. I note your reasons for using one. Good luck with your endeavours.
And I understand Jo's comments. All good background information.
Any photos of the alloy block / the build / the car in due course, for the rest of us ?
Thanks very much.
