    Mid-Wales driving road suggestions

In about a month I'll be driving from W Yorks down to Aberdyfi for a family gathering and the route looks very interesting:

    Huddersfield to Aberdyfi

Has anyone got any recommendations for any worthwhile detours to this route? I'll only be able to hoon on the way down as on the way back home I'll have a chest of drawers in the boot

Can't give you any suggestions as such.... too many to mention, but what i can tell you having visited wales for over 30 yrs the roads are the best in the uk for a nice workout with your quattro if you have one.The welsh roads incorperate all manor of gradient, twists, turns, curves, starights etc etc all in stunning scenery.Have fun!!

If I get the S2 ready will just need to see what funds are leftover after the car's almost spent all of it

Sell the bentley to fund it, your dad wont mind.Infact tell him he can be your passenger that will make up for it. Seriously you have got to do this drive before you die.Meant in the nicest possible way. By the way i lived in Malta from april 1966 untill oct 1969.Went out there when i was 6 months old as my dad (RIP) was in the Royal Navy. My parents loved it there.

Already told my Dad he can get an RS2 instead as his Bentley is basically an Audi underneath .

Will do the drive one day, not with my Dad though, he is well past being a good driver anymore, a bit of danger actually, we rented a car last October for ADI and we hadn't even left the car park yet he had already kerbed it

From what I've been told Malta was a much nicer place to be in back then, especially our Capital as they've kind of Bodged the City Gate and repairs of the Royal Opera House

I here what your saying. The whole world was a better place back then. Not the politics. Not many people know it,but the Maltese deserve special praise for the most resiliant people in the world for being bombed into oblivion.More bombs dropped on malta by the luftwaffe during a 3 month period than they dropped on the Uk during the entire war.The Spitfires we sent out there saved malta just in time. That's why there is a such strong bond between Malta and the UK.

Crazy really.... we all just can't get enough of german cars and especially S2 S6 and RS2.

If you come over and do the wales trip let me know and i will give you heads up on the route, and palces to visit and eat at etc etc..

I'm sure I can shoehorn that into my route After all I'm driving down from work on the Friday (12.30 finish.... every Friday ) and my Mum's 60th isn't until the Saturday

In fact my new route here now including Evo Triangle and what looks like a good bit of road from Bala down the B4391 towards Penybontfawr then accross to Llangadfan and eventually back on the route I would have been going on anyway

Cheers Mate, I've heard a lot about the war and also a reason why we have such good relations between Malta and the UK, we became indepentent in 1964 .

Will definitely give Wales a go if I do come there, are the roads fairly quieter than the rest of the UK over there?

                          :
The roads are quieter in wales especially out of holiday season.Best times would be october through to march unless someone knows better.Hoping Kit Simmons sees this as he's in south wales and knows it better than most like the back of his hand.

Did a slightly different route due to some roads being a lot more off the beaten track than I first thought... Here are the highlights:

                            'Evo Triangle'

I thought the best twisty part of the route started from just after Clawdd-Newydd to Pentrefoelas. Pentrefoelas to Cerrigydrudion is fairly boring to be honest It was so foggy on Friday I didn't bother with any pictures and just concentrated on the driving

                            Bryncrug to Minffordd

This was a great bit of road, especially the bit alonside the lake So much twistier than it looks on the map

                            Pictures taken from here

                            Horseshoe Pass

                            Pictures taken from here:

I'll definitely go back to to Evo Triangle again in sunnier weather, but I'll need to be in the area to do the road between Bryncrug and Minffordd. It'd be worth it though!!!

I drove past your car parked outside a house (B&B?) yesterday afternoon at about 4 pm, in fact I drove past and had to turn round and drive past again to double check as I recognised the plate from when Tristan had the car.

Not that familiar with that area, it's the first time I've been to Bryncrug or Aberdyfi, there's some great roads and scenery around there, was up that way looking at castles and burning V-power with my brother. Did a loop from Llangurig up too Machynlleth pottered around that area and drove a couple of the roads you took pic's of then went down the coast too Aberwrystweth and back too Llangurig before heading back down through Rhayader and Buith wells on my way home.
