It should be scrapped.Those 16 Valvers were awful cars having 140bhp and you really had to rev them to get that power and they were noisy as hell.I drove a 2 year old one so as new. Compared to the 150 bhp turbine silky smooth 2.6 avant no contest at all and the V6 packs punch much lower down the rev range.The 2.0 litre 8v was a much better car.

I had a 1986 Jetta Carat with the factory 1.8L 103 hp NAmerican GTI engine of the day (112 DIN hp in Europe - no cat). After some years, I got bored with the 1.8L and put in a 2.0L bubble block 8V from an Audi 80 (new short block and reused 1.8L 8V head). Nice. Lots of torque but maybe around 120 hp (Techtonics 268 cam). After awile I got bored with that and went for a 2.0L 16V Passat engine (130 hp here). Okay, I guess, a bit better on the top end than the 8V and not too much loss of torque down low. However, not one to leave well enough alone, I decided to go for the Euro 16V intake and the Euro cams, so something approaching 150 hp (with a Techtonics flow through exhaust system). Okay, I went too far. The thing needed to have its neck run to work. With the original Carat/GTI close-ratio 5 spd, I would be blasting around at 4000 rpm all the time to keep it in a decent power band. I remarked to myself on one 350 km (one way) work trip: "Way to go Dave, you turned a torquey little German engine into a high strung Italian job that has to be flogged to get anything out of it".

All that said, it would get to 180 kph relatively quickly and would smoke the tires easily off the line.

I agreed to help a mate look for his first Audi as he liked my 80 1.9 Cd saloon 5 pot saloon but he wanted something newish. He found this 2 year old 2.0 16v and we turned up to look at it just after the AA man had done his check on it.I drove it out and looked at my mate and said.....this thing is gutless either that or somethings wrong with it. I used to do all his servicing for him on his previous cars so he trusted my opinion. Anyway he found another one and we looked at that same problem. He then found a 1994 2.0 saloon just 2 years old with 100,000 miles on it and it ran beautifully lots of low down torque so accelerated well at all revs.It was a 2.0 sport saloon so handled really well to in fact better than the I5 with it's much heavier lump over the front axle.

Have to agree with you, a mate had an 80 Competition and having been in it I agree with it being noisy and the lack of power.

Have to agree with UrS4boy aswell, my brother had a Scirocco 16V with some engine upgrades and it was a really quick car, weighed about 600 kgs less than the Competition obviously which makes all the difference.

Very nice but a ridiculous price.For same money buys the very best 1975-77 Jaguar/Daimler XJ12 Coupe just as quick as an S2 0-60 and top end yet a car that has bucket loads more Charisma.The S2 in comparison with that car would be a baked bean can with a buzz box under the bonnet. Not that an S2 is a baked bean can with a noisy engine because it's not but it is when compared to the Jag/Daimler.Not one of the dealers on here would buy it at that price.

This one was 21,000 fully restored a year ago.
