No, 6mm plate is not appropriate. Look at OEM carriers and it should be immediately obvious.
Sorry to be negative but I am really fearful that your homebrew modifications may kill you and/or someone else.
If you don't know please, please please get someone who knows what they are doing to set this up for you.

error why hating when somebody asks a question....

it is a GIVEN that you risk screwing up your brakes & yourself when you fiddle with them. So please stop with the "Chicken Little" ****...WE KNOW!!!
This forum, I was given to understand, was open to free thinkers and the imagination, innovation of owners of these cars? Is it still that way or has the thought police taken over? You come here to exchange ideas and you come here to ask questions of others who may have accomplished what you want to do. You express thoughts and have the curious questions asked & ANSWERED with the same modicum of respect it is asked. Not to be lectured that you are bent!!

^^^ 6mm plate will probably fatigue over time because its too thin & eventually break in half. When I measured/drew up brackets for my chums Golf to run with Porsche calipers, this is what we decided to go for:
(they've worked perfectly on a track ONLY car thus far)

Wow that's and inch and 3/4's thickness....

what kind of steel are we talking about here? Cold rolled is suppose to be harder and less prone to heat failure and stress. That would be a heavy block of iron. But it is not for an Axially mounted Caliper like the Benz.

although it says steel on that drawing, they were eventually made out of aircraft quality aluminium bar stock (can't remember exact grade). I just thought it was a good example of how you could go about it but yeah, similar yet different!

The AMG mounting brackets pictured above were designed and made by me, they are pretty much a copy of the brkt AMG use but made to suit the Audi mounting points, and they were made from a high grade structural steel called Weldox 700, Google it. There's a reason OEM suppliers make them like this, and that's because of the loads they are subjected to, I'm not in a postion to argue with them on this so I'm quite happy to copy their work.

1/4" or 6mm plate is no where near man enough for the job, especially if you don't even know what grade you're going to use, you could end up with some Micky Mouse mild steel or worse. Get somebody who know's what they are doing to make them for you

See, thats exactly my worry, you say you know its a given than you risk screwing up your brakes...... if anyone modifies their brakes, I want to know its a given that they will NOT screw them up I believe the law in most civilised countries also leans in this direction
Free thinking & innovation are really great, but not when you could put other poeples lives at risk
As I have already politely said above and in the other thread you already started about this subject, do all other road users a favour and GET SOME HELP from someone who knows what they are doing. There are literally scores of threads on the forum detaling almost every conceivable brake upgrade, and there are also many drawings of professionally produced carriers like Andy's shown above, and many people equipped and willing to help

Material strength is paramount over thickness etc,

to put it into perspective for some folk:

think of looking at the hub from the front with the brake caliper bracket fitted, no disc/caliper etc needed for this test.

Where is most of the stress?
                          North/South or East/West?

so you have just answered that one correctly, if not you shouldnt be ****ing about with brakes!!

ive seen 40x40mm ally spacer/caliper mounting brackets bent like a hook

just imagine the disc rotation, will it bend or break if you hit it with a hammer as hard as you possibly can when cold, in the direction of rotation?
