Me and Mrs rj scotty are driving to Empuriabrave, Spain for a weeks holiday in August.
My heart wants to take the S2 but if we go in the TDI golf the fuel savings are substantial and apparently that means we have more spending money for the trip.
What do people think?

BUT I DON'T WANT A NEW CAR!

1982 VW Golf Mk1, primer yellow, will be finished one day, maybe.

This is true and I wont be constantly worrying about it getting scratched or dented. But if I don't take the S2 ill spend the whole time wishing I had.
I feel this is a no win situation

Plane+rent a car there and enjoy
200-300 eur fuel with the diesel or 400 eur with the i5.+ferry+road tax.
Or take the i5 if you want to enjoy the car,but your holiday will became a driving thing not a relaxing thing.Get informed about speed limits where you go and you will find out your average speed for all road will be little more compared to a truck...
Or if driving the audi relaxes you too,go ahead
Only place that still worth visiting with car for driving pleasure is Germany
Depends if you are really looking at the pennies I had the difficult decision and yeah I had a minor blip with my S2 but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and yeah theres was a couple of heavy driving days down there and back but you'll not regret taking the S2 they love long fast journeys and they also like the easy ones to!!lol My advice is take it and don't look back
Go with your heart and take the S2, maybe set up a vote for you, but I think that because you've put it on here you've already decided the S2, and just want everyone on here to back your plan to show the missus....
Me, I would have to say I would take the lazy derv all day long. I guess you would save some money but then it won't be cheap on Derv either.
Comes down to reliability and me not wanting to sit in crappy S2 seats for too long. Oh, and the fact that a foreigner could find parts for a Golf in a dairy.
Depends what route you are taking and what you are doing when you get there. If you're planning motorway to a hotel, couple of day breaks to the sea etc then derv all the way.
If you driving cross country on the scenic route and going over the Pyrenees then S2 for sure. Depends if it is a driving holiday or if you are driving to go on holiday.
It's down to reliability. Don't forget it's a holiday. If the S2 misbehaves you'll get picture and no sound from Mrs.RJ and both your breaks will be ruined! Fly, hire a car, maximise your time away in the sun, and she'll be waiting patiently in your garage for you when you get home, and she'll start first time and if the gods had decreed that she break down 300 miles later at least you'll only be somewhere local. Don't tempt fate! IMHO.

you're only going for a week - take the old oil burner. remember, the spanish like to use their bumpers for bumping!
by leaving the s2 in blighty, you'll have something to look forward to at the end of your sojourn and not be on a big downer 'cos it's time to come home!
I've driven mine round europe in a 10 day trip which is on here somewhere via Le Mans, French and Swiss Alps then a few days at the Ring.
It was fantastic, the car behaved well (bar an issue with the immobiliser) and I was so glad I did it...however, you need to be prepared to get under it yourself if something goes wrong and have a collection of parts which will likely keep you mobile. I took jack, axle stands, drop links, p/s hoses, fluids, full tools, sparks, belts, various seals, complete set of bolts for the underside, top mounts etc etc etc etc etc.
If you know the starting point for the trip is a non leaking, reliable and well used S2, then why not - if it isn't, rent and save the money, they drink a ton of fuel, are hot and work hard in high temps too so cooling circuit needs to be in tip top condition too.
