Bizarre handling on daily - Tyre Issues?

So, I recently bought a daily runner in the form of a Seat Leon TDI Fr 150.

Cannot fault anything so far, previous owner looked after it well, engine is good, box is good, interior is ok (for a spanish motor) and it doesn't leak. Bonus!

However, when I got the car, the front tyres needed changing and as I was driving up to Liverpool the following day, I got them done immediately. The rears are effectively new Sport Contact 5's but the tyre place did not have any, so I had Eagle F1's put on the front. All seems ok as far as I can tell in the dry but in the wet, something is not right. In a straight line, it sometimes twitches offline slightly without warning. It is not linked to speed. In the dry, it tracks perfectly well and does not tramline. I cannot fault the handling as such but in the wet, it is borderline dangerous. It almost feels like the car moves slightly sideways for a split second before gripping again.

Tracking is fine, tyre pressures are fine. I have no experience with these cars and reading up on them, they do seem to have some skittish handling tendencies but nothing like I have. Uprated ARB's are talked about but this is a daily, I am not hammering about in it like the S2.

Could mismatched tyres cause this issue do you think. I didn't really give it much thought as each corner has £100 of new rubber on it. Historically my tyres always match but I needed to get them done, so thought new tyres (even if different) would be better than the bald Conti's that were on the car when I got it.

The S2 needs new tyres, so if it is this, I will swap the F1's to the S2 and buy another 2 to match it and then find somewhere with the same Conti's for the rear of the Seat.

Anyone have any views on this or any experience of twitchy Leon's?

Tempted to take it to my mechanic to check for suspension issues as I cannot imagine what could be causing such bizarre intermittent twitching in wet conditions.

I can't comment on this Seat but I have had the same combination of tyres/brand on my S2 coupe front/rear with no handling issues or twitchiness at all.

In essence the front suspension On these cars is simple and robust.
known faults are arb to subprime Bush but that causes a dull knock over small bumps, Top mounts but they too make a knocking noise.
the lower arm rear Bush but these cause fidgeting under braking.
the only time I have ever experienced anything like you descdrive on a mk4 platform was a tt when the traaction control kept kicking in because of a duff yaw sensor. That however was very pronounced and frightening. Have you ran vcds on abs module

Thing is, i cannot get it to repeat in the dry, which suggests it is maybe an active fault but magnified in the wet. There is no knocking that suggests suspension, bush failure or anything like that and it seems to behave under braking. I unfortunately do not have access to any leccy gizmo's to diagnose any electrical faults. I will take it to the mechanic and ask him to take a look underneath and run a diagnosis check on it, as it is rather unnerving to drive in the wet.

I'm happy to help. If it were traction control the symbol would flash. You couof try driving it with asc. Off but it never completely disables it.,

Cheers Steve, if my local mechanic cannot scan for codes, I will give you a shout. I am over in Banbury and he is 5mins away, so more convenient than Redditch but you know the car well, so will deffo give you a shout if Andrew cannot sort it out.

You say the tracking is fine. Is that because you've actually checked it or because it's pulling? It sounds like tracking to me.

I have not checked it personally myself but it was done when I had the front tyres changed. No vibrations, seems to track straight without hands on the wheel. Not scientific I know but I have to assume it is ok. When I drove the car back from purchase, it was dry and I did not notice any issues. In the dry with new tyres, it is fine. Only in the wet do I feel intermittent twitches off line when driving in a straight line, even at speeds as low as 35mph. Tyres are not showing signs of uneven wear.

Get the back end checked too, it could be coming from there.

Was rear axle beam bushes. Totally shot allowing a lot of sideways movement. Nothing was banging or knocking and until I could get it off the ground was just clutching at straws. All sorted now with new bushes and it handles like it should in wet and dry. For a while I was performing some fine drifts. Back to driving in a straight line now. How very dull.

Good news. Did you poly Bush it? It really tightens things up

The knackered bushes weren't OEM, so I replaced them with standard parts. Did consider poly bushing it but I don't really drive it hard so went for standard set up. It drives spot on now and feels pretty hard as it is or that might just be the cruddy roads we have. Should last a while with any luck.

Tyres have a releasing compound on them as new and need to be scrubbed in before they work correctly. I usually spin them up a bit if I want to accelerate the process

Tyre manufacturer websites usually carry such warnings and I've been told by tyre places in the past.
