Mod cons on an s2- what would you have ?

Anyone else ever think how far ahead the s2 was ahead of it's time when it was launched ?

    Power,6 speed,build etc

I now work for mercedes and drive quite a few cars and it's interesting the amount of equipment these newer cars have nowadays. It gets me thinking about what would be good on the s2:

    Auto lights
    Auto wipers
    Hill start
    Lights that turn around corners
    Mood lighting

What other goodies would be nice ?

    Hio,
i work on and sell these modern cars for a living.
I think its charm ( if that's the right word ! ) of the 90s cars is that they are not spoiled with technology for the sake technology. Electronic handbrakes are a good example of this. Its totally unnecessary,do the job no better than pulling a lever up between the seats and boy when they go wrong (and they do) the cost is staggering. (And you can't do handbrake turns !} Don't get me wrong car manufacture has come on leaps and bounds in the last 10 to 15 years but in most cases unless you have the money to spend on something a little special the modern car is a fairly sole less thing.
The only 2 things where I felt the S2 lacked was the brakes and the lights which I'm sure all would agree on (Both easily solvable ) Had it still been in production today I'm sure it being an Audi it would have been a fine car but do you get people today so enthusiastic over say an S5 as all here on the forum are about their S2.
    I think not.

My boss has an S5. It sounds lovely, goes pretty well and I love the shape and lines but it is fairly lacking in soul and character.

I don't think I would change anything about the S2 itself in terms of mod cons. I think they got it all spot on in terms of the balance between power and refinement (for the day) If I had my time again, I would not have got a Coupe with a sunroof as the pre-select "mod con" is a little selective shall we say.

I guess I could make an argument for wanting air con but that was available as such, so a poor argument.

Nah, I am happy with mine.

Aggree, especially the handbrake. Just saw a an A5 getting towed out of a flooded road and the rear wheels were locked as the electrics couldnt be turned on.
(driving your A5 into a flooded road obviously is not the brightest thing to do)

But I do miss the newer audi CCM , remote window close, driver door priority etc. (thats soon to be sorted though)

I would go with better brakes as mentioned and bigger wheels an option for a 17 or 18 inch instead of 16?? and dual climate control would have been nice!

What about the guided missiles that you zero in on the target with the radio knobs . That would be ideal to move the caravans and tesco lorries out of the way.

Totally agree, new cars have too much electronic gubbins for me. Simple things like the heater knobs I really like in S2s as apposed to 20 extra dash buttons.

Would like bigger wheels/brakes as standard apart from that Audi had it near right in terms of options.
Id like cruise control in mine and working air con

Nobody will get in my coupe with me driving, so this extra would be wasted on me. I must be driving it right.

Heater in the ur quattro is even better than S2, you get fresh air up the centre vent whatever you have the heater set to, brilliant.

I get into mine in the evening and fire up the HIDS to see where i'm going, turn on the heated seats and rear window demist and watch in marvel as my mirrors demist and my butt instantly warms up. Drive rings around everybody in the wet and flooded roads with my superior grip and traction, then a few minutes later i'm cruising down the motorway in warm and cosy leather seat with the cruise control on. Nope, wouldn't change a thing

You forgot the part where (almost) everything disappears in your mirror when the lights turn green at the M1 toll road. I really miss that thrash up the hill - did it once with launch control - massive grin... G-Force.... Transmute lol

I agree with the sentiment of this thread - there are precious few of the gadgets on modern cars that I think the S2 is lacking. Sure the convenience things like auto closure and priority door locking would be neat - I bet they could be retrofitted without too much grief though.

In saying that - my B6 had really nice integration between the OE satnav and cluster which is neat for those times you are going somewhere 1st time but it's not exactly the be all to end all.

Anyone sharing drivers seat with a spouse etc really likes the memory seats and mirrors that are paired to the keys on modern Audi with the right options.

I drove something recently that had a nice touch when reversing where it pivoted the mirrors down to improve the view of kerbs etc

If the S2 had left the factory with an adjustable steering column, 70bhp more oomf, 17" rims over bigger brakes, a slightly stiffer rear end (to make it less front biased) and decent headlights - it would have been pretty much perfect.

A list of mods to make the S2 a better machine from standard.
                              More power.
                              Better brakes.
                              Adjustable differentials.
                              B4 rear suspension.
                              Lighter weight.
                              Wide body option.
                              Better lighting.
                              More headroom.

                              Just my 2 cents, Chris
