Depends if you want something a bit nicer, or cheaper?
Also if you are buying bottom of the marker cars, are you going to buy it and do the timing belt, or just drive it and scrap it/fit a new engine if it snaps (bit of an inconvenience if it snaps on holiday etc)

I don't want a total banger. I want something decent. I will still look into what's been done etc. Don't want to buy cheap cheap and then start paying again!

I recon the A4 is probably the best bet for these reasons.
1. you can get one with a decent spec.
2. Its great to drive.
3. A B5 tdi on the last year of production will be 2000/2001 so will be a newer car than a really old 80.
You could go for an 80 but those 80 tdi's are now very old an the technology is not as good as the A4 diesel and i have never come across an 80 tdi owner who has not had running problems on them.Something to do with Fueling causing erratic running and is not easy to sort as some on here have testified and given up. Get a A4 tdi with the AJM 115BHP and quite a bit more torque over the 110 or 90bhp version.

I was looking, you can get one well under £1000 with air con, climate, and some even come with leather seats. Quattro would be perfect

I have an B5 A4 1.9tdi quattro, black leather, air con, chipped 135bhp+. Gets silly MPG, comfy and handles great (for what it is). Probably the best daily I have had (S2 aside of course )
Took ages to find one that was not rusty, mega miles or shagged.
Just be aware a front arm kit is £400, rear bush kit similar, £70 for alignment adjustment bolts, so a squeaky bush can get expensive real fast. Dont get ebay arm kits unless you want to replace them in a couple of months.

I think your doing the right thing. At your stage in life as a young man at university you don't want to be saddled with a hang mans noose forever always not being able to afford the repairs. You should be enjoying life something i wish i told myself at your age.But to me the car was everything.Wrong!! Friends and relationships are more important Janis. A car can wait until you can really afford it. Thats my honest opinion mate.
At 50+ I've BTDT and agree with the above. Sell the S4 or park it free of charge in a dry garage for 5 year until you get a decent job with decent money, and before you get hitched and have kids. Life and the ability to mess with cars comes in cycles.
Don't muck around with an A4 for the reasons mentioned, get a good'ish Audi 80 TDI, saloon with a tow bar or an Avant and only do the absolute necessary work to make it pass it's MOT and look ok. Not waste time putting leather into it, uprating the brakes or suspension, the remote central locking, a good stereo or any other non essential items.
What's most important right now, in order of preference is your studies, your health, your friends, and......
Your studies are the most important thing in your life right now to get the maximum qualification to allow you to earn as much money as is feasible to have a decent life, and then to be able to indulge your interest in cars. In the future, there'll always be the car in the condition you want, once you have the money, so wait drive an 80 TDI "dog". Buy an 80 non runner for £100 and store it for parts, but obviously only if you have the room. It's cheaper and quicker even with a daily dawg to have a parts cars to pick from.
Enjoy not having to care unduly about the 80, and not having to spend loads of money / time on it, be free of the shackles of S car ownership.
Do not be embarrassed about the 80, or concerned what others think of it or you, you have your eye on the bigger picture.
Certainly don't worry what others on here are doing, there is always people on here with more money, more mates, more equipment, more skills, more brains, and more time to go one, ( or ten times ), better with a faster, more powerful, better looking, better handling, better stopping etc. etc. car.
This and other forums are dangerous places, they are like a drug, and people can unwittingly get sucked in reading all of the cool posts and the hype. Don't worry about what others in your life are doing car wise, concentrate on the studies now and it will pay you back in spades for the rest of your life. Your time to "play" will come. I know I sound like a nagging parent, but....
Regrets so far, yeah !, too many to mention, tbh, including various cars as well .
It's certainly not easy to sell the S4 car and walk away for a number of years, and it's very easy for me to pontificate with this advice, especially after I have BTDT, but it is way harder for you to now take the advice on board, act on it and carry it through.
Hope the above helps you. It is intended to do so.
Without money, life is tough, and time dedicated to getting the qualifications now is the shrewd way, and only way, forward from where you are now in your life.
