Within a couple of minutes the car was started and it's the best £30 I've ever spent.

That photo of the back of your ignitions switch indicates that some monkeylad/gumby brain surgeon has been in there fitting some form of immobilizer or the like.

As per the list of items that Fuse S12 serves, the only one that *I* think has a remote potential to affect the engine is the "multiple sensor" (the Multifunction temperature switch (MFTS). More info HERE (F76 MFTS info)

S12 (keep scrolling to see where "a" goes)

Ooo..there's "a", going to the F76 MFTS and the F4 reversing lamps M16 and M17

I think 862 looks like the thin red wire which powers your radio when the key is in the ignition. Nothing to do with your problem.

                  Help no power

I suspect putting power to fuse 12 is back feeding the ignition circuit.

Those black sleeves on the black wires on the back of the ignition switch don't look stock, is that cloth tape or plastic round the loom?

If so I would I tape that part of the loom and find out where the ignition wire has been cut and spliced into.

Maybe. But is not 862, it is 86S and the thin red wire goes to the mini-check according to Audi 80 diagrams at S2Central.net, one of which I have annotated as below. I think some(idiot) has tapped into it as a switched power (it is) where they could have got much better power from wherever the thicker red wires from "15" and "50" on the switch go to (a bus bar under the dash, I suspect).

That's the wire we all use to switch the radio because it stays on when you switch the engine off but leave the key in.

No, the MFTS does not affect ignition

Okay. I was just going on what Audi says about the 86S switch output.
