    A4 Cabrio roof not working

Can anyone help, I need some info, Please.

I recently bought the wife the above, but yesterday it disgraced itself.
She opened the roof to drive home, but once back at the house, it would'nt close. The cover lifts 2 or 3 inches then stops. No obvious sound from the motor, and it did this maybe 3 times, then nothing. We closed the roof manually, and locked it with the 'T' key, but now the warning light is flashing on the dash, and the boot will only open with the key.

According to some of the blogs I have read, the roof can be reset by doing a full Open/Close manual cycle which will then (hopefully) also reset the boot lid. Why would the electric roof affect the boot lid switch??

Anyway, assuming that this works, I then need to find the cause of the original fault, which (again, according to some of the blogs I have read) appears to be likely to be a Hydraulic Pump motor fault (hopefully power supply, or brushes seized in their housings). If this is the base fault, and the pump/motor isn't running, then is it possible that the 2 or 3 inches movement of the cover is due to residual pressure in the reservoir. which is now depleted?

Thanks for reading, and if anyone has come across this before- I would love to hear how it was resolved

This happened to my wife's a4 cab. It was the operating switch in the car. the one on the centre console.

What year? Vcds should be able to help. I have seen the wiring in the boot that passes by the hinge fail but I can't remember what/how that affected things now.

        Sorted now!

I stripped & cleaned the motor comm, but once I had opened the motor, it was fairly obvious that that wasn't the problem. Then to microswitches....
The first one I happened across (which is the one that inhibits the roof if the 'parcel shelf' is in the open position), wasn't being closed because the parcel shelf was stuck about 2" above it's rest position.
Freed the shelf mechanism, did a full manual cycle of the roof, and hey presto!! It works.
Tbh, although I could have done without the whole episode, at least the operating mechanism is no longer a complete mystery, and it didn't cost a fortune at the stealers

Just one other question, for those of you who know the A4- the Cruise doesn't work, and I'm struggling to find a fuse for it. Any suggestions??

        Thanx, in anticipation

          It's happened again

Absolutely peeing down outside (and I've got no garage) so I'm spending time here instead of getting wetter. I've got to the multiplug feeding the inhitor switch that was the problem last time, and it meter's Ok. (Continuity check gives expected readings when manually lifting drop-down shelf in boot)

Symptoms are exactly as last time, ie pull the switch in centre console and windows drop and roof lifts a few inches and stops.

Last time I was convinced the problem was the motor/pump assy (from the info on the Net) so I stripped it- checking specifically the Com and brushes, which were as new (obviously I checked that the brushes were completely free to move as they wear), so I'm not suspecting the motor this time.

On the RH side hinge mechanism are two sensor blocks. One is obviously a pair of microswitches in a block, and the other possibly a Pot as it is a rotary switch. I haven't metered these, although the two microswitches in the single block do give a positive click when pressed, and I haven't located the multiplug for either yet.

On the motor bracket are 3 relays, which, again I haven't tested yet.

I've tried a manual cycle twice with the T key, but it hasn't reset it.

I know it's vague, as Rain stopped Play, but anyone got any ideas as to where I should be looking??

          Many thanks

If. It has happened again then it is most likely the motor.
Due to there position they get moisture in them which Nackers the motor . At first it is intermitant then it stops altogether. Least that what happened to mine in the end.
You can have the motor repaired , cheaper than a new one . Second hand ones will be a gamble.
I think it cost about £100 to fix the motor ,and it is not to difficult to do.
              Good luck
