Will an MOT brake testing machine (freinometer?) always ruin the centre diff?

Despite my very strict instructions and almost begging them not to, the stupid people at the Belgian department of transport insisted on putting my S2 on the brake rollers... front and rear wheels...

I now have a strange noise which wasn't there yesterday, kind of like wind rush, but coming from the centre diff area of the car - happens on lift-off and not when driving really slowly... does happen in more than one gear...

If the speed is kept low enough, it doesn't cause any problems. Seem to remember 4mph being the number

From Audi direct for testing on a single-axle brake dynamometer for four-wheel drive vehicles:

"The Torsen differential will be seriously damaged if test speed exceeds 6 km/h."

Unfortunately, no way to claim as there is no clear evidence they have broken it - they would deny it anyway, after all, the car left the premises under it's own power...

Remember, this is Belgium, the home of car haters... nothing good ever happens here and especially nothing automotive.

I'll drive it around for a while and see if it gets worse... if it does, I'll park it as close to the Testers garage as possible and set it alight...

Actually Des, that's a really good point... no need to remove the entire box... could be worse...

Remove the drive shaft and then its only 5 or 6 bolts. Slides out and new one slides in simples. I have a few if your stuck. I think the center diff should be fairly tolerant to a short run on the break rollers in all fairness. Maybe it's another noise. A few fast starts will help prove one way or the other.

How will a roller damage the torsen?Front wheels on the stand: one turns forward one in reverse. And no action is generated to the center diff. The same with the rear.It just needs the setup for 4x4 car.

I'm hoping the noise I'm getting is linked to much other prodding and poking around when some fuel lines were changed, perhaps heatshield is touching the gearbox, prop, rear diff.... when under slight load...

Going to have a proper look tomorrow, and give it a little stick to test things (now I've got rid of the boost leaks from around the WGFV...)

I know it wasn't on the rollers for long and they didn't spin very fast, so... fingers crossed...!
