    Audi TT any good

So S2's have gone silly, I feel the boat has gone with these cars now.
Especially the coupe models. estates are somewhat doableish.

    Case in point:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-QUATT...gAAOSwknJXx0Yu

Sure it's a nice car that has been well looked after but there is no getting away from the fact it's done 179K miles and is a 1991 car.

    Likewise:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1994-AUDI-...4AAOSwMtxXtbkZ

Similarly a tidy car albeit with a running fault (could be simple, could be horrendous), not exactly low mileage at 165K miles either.

for this reason my son has abandoned the idea of an S2. They have lost feasibility in his opinion and to get one and get it sorted would cost the same as an E46 M3 or B7 S4. Makes sense only if someone wants an S2 and only an S2 at whatever cost.
It would be better to save up some more and wait for a TTRS or an RS3. Much newer, much faster, still has the 5 cylinder engine etc. but offer better value.

For now though, anybody have any experience of a 225 TT 1.8T. Bar the fact its not an inline-5 it seems to be where the S2 was a few years ago and is readily available for reasonable money.

Main questions are how do they handle and how tunable are they? I know the 1.8T VAG lump is pretty decent provided its looked after (and that it eats coil packs!)

The wife owned one for many years and I have worked on a lot of them. Common faults.
Vac pipes causing mixture code faults.
    Oil pick up screen clogging.
210 can suffer with secondary air injection valve sticking open filling all pipe work with vapour from the exhaust. This gets ejected into the air box over time. 225 bam engine didn't have SAI.
Manifold cracking on k04 turbo versions eg 225 bam and 210 apy.
Rust in wings and sills increasingly common.
Halfex controller failure causing haldex to lock on engine start up causing rear end to drag.
Cluster failure pixels temp and fuel gauge
Lateral acceleration and yaw sensor failures causing traction control light to come on.
They are a good engine if cared for eg regular oil changes. It's torquey and revs well. I always found the handling tad twitchy but sure footed all the same.

Oh and variable valve tensioner failure. Although only done a couple of those. So not common I'd say.

They feel gutless, even with a map, intercooler and exhaust. Depending on your budget I'd still say a manual m3 is the way to go. Holding prices and some are rising.

If you're not fussed about an S2 the M3 is a lot of car for the money, still sensibly priced

I can't believe the "tatty" green S2 made ÂŁ7k! It will need subframes and fuel lines as a bare minimum soon. Wow!

I'd say there ok if looked after but unless you get it vagcom there will likely be a list of faults and problems for engine wise regular oil changes, common problem vac pipes boost leaks em cracking because there crap and ko4 housing cracks as well. As for m3 e46 again if not looked after well it's going to cost first thing is Vanos units because they need the right oil and regular oil change seen lots not been looked after and there under powered,I would choose the m3 because it's more of a drivers car rwd is fun but not to every ones taste

                Ok cheers
Tbh an E46 M3 is a little too expensive. Cracking car but in the position where he could probably buy the car but not maintain it which is a no no

Porsche Boxster seems to be the car to buy at the moment, plenty available at reasonable money, flat six engine and supposedly a hoot to drive.

Main attraction to an S2 was the 2.2 Powerplant, seen as this is not an option with the TT it sounds best left.

a mapped 225 should easily see 270bhp/270ftlb so shouldn't feel gutless. I've currently got a mapped s3 and although its a bit bland/smooth/boring compared to the 270bhp 90quattro that i'm used too, it does go ok..

Got a 6cyl E36 at the minute, two BMW non M would be nice but a bit silly (and a bit boring as I've got a BMW already)

Yeah thats what I wasn't sure about a mapped TT should be quick but I feel a Boxster S would still trounce it and offer loads more of fun. I can't see anything else at that price point seems to be a lack of capable stuff produced around that time

Gone are the days of S2, E36 M3, 944 etc being 5 grand cars.

I think as soon as an RS3 or TTRS becomes a bit more reasonable they would be a good choice. Plus waiting longer also gives more time for a larger budget. There is also the Cayman, BMW M3 E92 & B8 S4 to choose from.
Not sure what the German manufacturers were doing through the late 90s/early 2000s but they didn't offer a great deal of interesting stuff. Glad they returned to form.

In the meantime I can't see past the Boxster S

I have to say I have just serviced and mot'd a 225 bam engined tt. ( failed on rear springs) another common fault.. And I've enjoyed the couple of little drives. I have also driven a boxer s and prefer the TT. I was a little disappointed by the boxster.
                        I guess it's a personal thing.

At that price point and age, i'd also look at the honda s2000 and the alfa spider v6. Both a little more exotic than the tt and boxter.

So simple to swap in an 07k I5 into a TT... Best of both worlds... Buy a TT with a bad motor... Swap in a 5 cylinder.

Great idea in principle except the UK did not get the 5 cylinder engine used in the golf with the exception of the aforementioned TTRS & RS3!

Sounds like a delightful swap though!

I'm just not a fan of 4 cylinder/V6 engines. For me the lack of decent noise means there is no sense of occasion when driving them. Plus nearly every car out there is an i4 or V6.
Alfa V6 is the exception but also come with Alfa reliability
I would have bought a Celica GT4 long ago if that didnt matter to me or even a B5 S4 ( at them putting a V6 in that)

inline 5 however are pretty exclusive and are probably the best sounding engine configuration. Even the base golfs/passats in the US sound class

Flat-6 engines also sound pretty incredible

Even the inline 6 in a basic 320i sounds good
