How in the name of all that is good are you guys managing to get an AVERAGE MPG on a run in excess of 30mpg? Even driving at a steady and boring 55mph the best I have ever managed was 29mpg on a "run" from London to Norwich. I even upped the tyre pressures on that journey to try and increase the economy!

With the type of driving I do most regularly, my overall consumption is 22.9mpg, which is not too bad considering. Worst I've ever seen was 14mpg which was on a very enjoyable day of spirited driving.

around 10 is the worst, 26 is the best and 20 average. I just can't stop myself from using full turbo at some point, no matter how economical I try to be...

I was thinking the same as you Dan. These must be standard cars. I think my remap (AMD) runs rich and is obviously going to be less efficient than a standard car. I really struggle to get anything over 23 - 24. Perhaps I need to have another look at it and change the lambda? It has always been the same and not got any worse...

        Cheers,

I did see a small increase in MPG when I changed the lambda this summer, but only because with the faulty lambda the car was running very poorly. I have also seen a reasonable improvement in MPG when my wife drives the car but as you say, how are people getting this order of magnitude better MPG in what also seem to be modded cars? Mine's an MTM chip and I understand that runs rather rich too (the excess fuel is used as a coolant?), but even so...

            Standard engine, not messed with.
Best on a long run was 32.7mpg. Durham to Wales and back again. Computer (and missus) set to tell me if I went over 80mph.
Worst was a few weeks ago on a weekend blast to the Lakes, averaged 16.2mpg.
Average normally is 26.4mpg, running around and back and forth to work.
Always use super unleaded, and all are around the same, apart from the bleedin price

I've heard that unlike most cars, the audi S cars unboard computers doesnt flatter the MPG at all and you are probably getting more Miles to the Gallon than you think. Correct me if im wrong though.

Ive done long term independant consumption checks (sad isnt it ) and the MPG works out pretty close; it should do, Bosch Motronic was state of the art 10 years ago....

Whenever I have "done the maths" the figure agrees with the trip computer to within 1 or 2 mpg.....

I remeber Alastair telling me when I bought his car that he'd had hassle when he ordered a new one, they kept on sending a Farenheit one instead of his specified celcius one. So you must be able to specify when ordering, although part number doesn't state.

Errr... somewhat less under other circumstances. The following shows the trip computer mpg (average - not the instantaneous) figure for a c. 80 mile run:

                          O dear, i average 23mpg with a 7A

I always used a great software package called "automobile" on my Palm to track fill ups and generate stats. It always gave me 22-25mpg on each tank full. Long term average (over a year) is 23mpg.

Recently i fitted the onboard computer into the car and it seems fairly accurate, if anything no more than 1mpg away from the Palm softwares stats after each tank full. The real time MPG is interesting, you can save a lot of fuel if you drive it right, but thats just boring

One thing i didn’t realise for ages was the fact you can also reset the average MPG on the computer, if you reset after each fill up it gives an average for each tank of fuel, or if you don’t reset it you get a long term average from the point you last reset it. Might have an effect on the stats, who knows.

                          Mark.

Cruise control non-stop for 150 miles at 60(-ish) mph. That's the exception rather than the rule - my "normal" average given the usual crawl to work (etc) is about 24mpg.

I guess that answered my question. Not many cars have the MPG their trip computer makes themout to have, most of the time it completely flatters the car so im impressed that these are holding so accurate.

best ever pre any mods was 29 up the A1 to a meet. This was A) because of the hundreds of speed cameras on the A1 and B) pre any mods! Average. these days is 15-22
