Aah, the good old "instantaneous consumption meter" - that's one hell of a scary gauge that one! What you're seeing is perfectly normal for the S2 I'm afraid.
If it's any consolation, if I'm doing a whole tank in urban driving, which is quite common, I get on average 16mpg, which is lousy to say the least.

I would recommend changing the lambda probe though - I did it a few months back (did a thread on it with pictures), it's a straight forward enough task and will help improve the consumption. Other things that help, especially in town, is to use as low revs as you can when running along in traffic - this avoids spinning the turbo up too much and that does really help.

My worst ever fuel consumption was going to a track day last year at Bedford. I got 160 miles out of 16 gallons of gas.

In actual fact, the instantaneous consumption should not change when you are stationary, whether the engine is at idle or revving flat out. This is because the instant consumption is calculated for every 30 metres travelled. Therefore the instantaneous consumption shows the figure for the last complete 30 metres travelled as you slowed to a stand still (so it if reads 9, stop blipping the throttle as you approach the lights - that's what Clio drivers do )

The 200 and then - - - displays are shown when you are rolling with you foot off the gas. In this case, the consumption is minimal for the distance travelled.

A full tank of 70 litres, of which you can drink at least 67 (never pushed it until dry) should take you around 280 - 320 miles on an average urban cycle (i.e. not too much queueing or booting it). which will be around 19 - 22 MPG average. On a fast cruise you should get around 25 - 27 MPG average and on a slow cruise (following caravans ) it will nudge 30 MPG, but you will die of boredom.

I have had an average of 7 MPG for a full lap of Le Mans (8.3 mile lap) :mischeif: but you do clear an indicated 150MPH 6 times a lap

One last point, most Audis will do upto 30 miles after the 'miles remaining' reaches E. I have managed 18 miles, but then found a petrol station.

      Cheers n

Si, you're absolutely right!!! The instantaneous should technically say zero if you're stationary with the engine running, but it doesn't change.

Lowest I remember seeing on mine is 5mpg when mashing the go pedal, but I've never seen 200 or --- if my memory serves me correctly! Friend's A4 1.8T used to show that and I was somewhat bemused at first!!

Doesn't the service manaul say the Autocheck warning comes on with 8 litres left?
I've run my tank dry...silly boy.
You can get 40 miles easy out of it after the autocheck warning comes on.
The needle will then be well below the last red segment.

Yup - 30 nervous miles. Then filled it up - 68 litres (Should have gone another 10 miles with the last 2 litres!)

Because I was taking it very easy just before I pulled into the filling station, autocheck reckoned I had a range of over 400 miles when the ignition was turned on after filling up.

                      Ck.

                        @ Si,

Thanks for that post regarding instantaneous fuel consumption. I have kept wondering why my consumption was different all the time while at idle. I thought there may be something wrong with my trip computer....

                        Cheers.

I give up flicking the comp.
Put in £25 optimax. Showed i had 110 miles. Ive only done 17miles since & now it says 85. Ive been gentle with him aswell.
Going up north saturday for the night, then back home. Im thinking this journey is gonna cost me £150 or near in juice.

I think he likes to be given a bit, as being Gentle has made no difference

will check the Lambda, just not got the time & its raining

I drove up to Scotland and back last month - the jorney up there had lots of stop overs so cant give a good guesstimate but on the way back I did aprox 680 miles and with petrol prices as the were it cost me £160 (sorry didnt always have the option to use optimax! ) I thought this wasnt bad - but it has a thirst like me on a Friday night :mischeif: when traffic is at a go-slow!
Its not how many horses you have, its how you ride 'em that counts :mischeif:

On your right hand stalk, press the up and down button until you are in the upper middle sector. This Average Fuel consumption. Now press hold the small rectangular button on the underside of the right hand stalk for 2 seconds. This will reset the average fuel consumption figure. Start driving and tell us what is says after a couple of days. If this has not been reset for years it will never change as the number of samples it has taken to complile the average will be in the millions.

I would recommend you do this every time you fill up. That way you can keep an eye on it and will have a warning that the car may be running badly if the figure starts to get worse.

I would expect you to get between 20 - 24 in a standard S2 doing town driving.

Anyway let us know how you get on as the instantaneous MPG figure is a waste of time.

HTH and I didn't sound too harsh!
