    Cold weather brings more power

Aah, last night, it was around the 0C mark in London and I was driving home, with a tank of Tesco 99 and the car was really on form. Had great throttle response, definitely more power, and it was popping like crazy on the overrun, great stuff! Definitely when the temperature drops, there's more grunt and the 99octane stuff must be allowing more advance. Love it.

I noticed this just over a week ago as well, my car is in bits until Sunday when i finish the suspension, then i'll get to try it some more, hopefully with much improved handling!!

Just gotta be careful, a friend on another forum post up details and pics of an accident on the M25 round my way last night, apparently the car hit a patch of ice and skidded in to the central barrier etc and was totally wrecked! Dont know about the people inside, but deffo need to be careful now the cold is here!

I was quite pleased to see the gritter lorries had been out last night, but yes you're right, wise to be careful out there. Worth checking tyre pressures as they will bound to have dropped a few PSI now with the colder weather.

It was -3° at 7pm last night and -4° at 7:30am this morning, so I think it was pretty chilly overnight.
You're right about cars loving it though. Get a nice clear dry road through the day and its a blast!

I'm sure i read somewhere that the stock motronic sw compensates for high IATs by raising boost. So cold day/hot day it has roughly the same power. True or false?

Mine definitely loves the cold weather, and the reduced grip can be good fun too.
I'm not looking forward to the salt on the roads though.

Drifter dude, it's the air density that does it! Colder air = more density = more fun!

Wish my baby was in one piece to enjoy the fun ...but our time will come

I know that, but i thought the idea was the original car felt the same in all conditions. I'm not sure about altitude though.

Sorry, that sounded a bit patronising!

I don't think it would be possible to compensate for extremes, especially extreme low density air - but small variations would be another matter. I've experienced the cold air advantage in the past and I think it's genuine!

After all, if it wasn't, there wouldn't be much point in running a cold air feed to the airbox or fancy filter?!!

Well, that's why I was asking really. I've never had a completely stock S2, and I don't know all the ins and outs of Motronic, so I don't know.

I've definitely noticed an increase in power - this past few mornings I've been off to work at 6am, and the car is just pulling wonderfully (on Tesco's good stuff of course) - just a shame by the time the car's warmed up I'm almost at work! And while she's cold I get alot of resitance, like the handbrake is left up a notch - I'm assuming this is down to cold oil, gearbox, drivetrain, diff oil etc... and I believe the engine runs rich till it's up to temp? The joint effect of ragging it when warm to enjoy the increased power, and massive resistance + rich running while it warms up, would explain my recent drop of 3mpg on the morning run to work!!

As per the Motronic software, i read up about that on s2central as I'm looking to pull the codes as soon as I get a few spare hours and I did read about the adjusting boost... not sure how a remap would affect that though? And the figures weren't a full adjustment - ie, the cold still increases power but not by as much as the turbo also pushes less boost. There was also an effect of increased boost to compensate altitude a little, but only i think to about 2000m. I'm sure someone can correct me on that one if I'm wrong... dammit I think my car is clever than me!

                        cheers

After I have warmed the engine through I've noticed the Forge DV making more noise in this cold air.
Boosting more with the colder air?

Well I guess it's ambient pressure again?!!

Couple that with the fact that the weather in the UK is currently revelling in a high pressure system (just to add a few millibars!) - the difference to atmosphere might be negligible (so perhaps the DV thing is not so easy to explain?), but the difference in a sealed cylinder will be slightly more significant.
