Thinking of getting one of those portable satnav things, you know Tomtom or Garmin. I know it doesn't increase horsepower or handling so ultimately pointless but the wife does some miles and i thought it might mean i get my tea sooner in the evenings Anyway just thought id get some opinions from a reasonably clued up bunch
They didn't know so i now have to ask you lot

tomtom is my co-pilot. Also helps for speed camera's & black spots
and all sorts of points of interests, like fuel stations & cash machines etc etc..
If its voice gets annoying, you can buy more. I'd give him 1 11out of 10
Right poll time, any thoughts would be much appreciated

Ok, ive used TomTom on a PDA and TomTom 500 and also Dell's version ( NavTek i think ?) on their PDA. If you want my advice then stick with TomTom. You can download the camera database for free and other POI's.

Had mine for a few years and probably has to be the best £400 i've spent.
Has taken me all over the country, through the centre of unknown towns, to eBay sellers addresses in the middle of nowhere and skiing to the italian border.
Fantastic. You can have a go with mine when you pick up the parcel shelf if you want!

Garmin Street Pilot gets my vote. Taken me all through the UK an Europe for the last 2 years.
It also takes the wife and kids away for the odd week to friends in Norfolk
I have TOMTOM on mine and my mum got co pilot live. Co Pilot is alot more clumsy with the way you enter things into the menu's to select the journey and has less options to set it up than tom tom. Both can have camera updates put on them.
I have a pda phone which i run it on. www.clubimate.com it is the i mate jam and works fine with tom tom.
I used a Garmin once - borrowed from a mate. Found it quite clumsy sitting on the dash with wires about. Also found it too much to take in, the voice directions were fine, but there was a bit too much info on the screen. As I say, it was some time ago and probably one of the first ones out so whether they have come on from that......
I actually prefer sat nav head units. Had a Pioneer unit which was excellent( ANH P-9R) Only complaint was the joystick control was a little too responsive whil tapping in details. Now have a Becker nav pro head unit. Brilliant, - simple but effective
