Hi, Jimmy is a 92 car, & just wondering if i need the cats back on for the MOT.
Someone said that it will fail immissions test with the replacement pipes on &
that its got to be registered in 91 to be ok without them.
Is this right, because im wanting rid of them if i dont need them.
When was it first registered? If it was before 1st Aug 1992 then you are ok to put it though an MOT without the cats on I think and it shouldn't fail though there have been loads of differing views over the years. mine was registered on 4th August 1992 so the MOT would be for a cat equipped vehicle though it *may* be possible to get it through if the engine is hot and running clean....mines never been near to the top of the emission values so i think its likely it could sneak in a pass without them but not tried - yet
I think your right, I dont think any year car technically needs cats but the emmision values after 92 are much tighter and the only way to pass them is with a cat? I would be suprised to see any type or car without a cat(s) pass cat test? Could be wrong mind?
Money is everything! Second to Power of course!!! But money breeds power??
No, after the cut off date a car must have it's original emission equipment.
All vehicles registered after August 1992 will not pass an MOT without a Catalytic Converter fitted.
That's the legislation, if you find a sympathetic garage that's cool, but they're not supposed to pass a car made after that date if the cats ain't there!
Before that date, you do not have to pass the specific cat test, whether the car had cats or not.
A happy (cat-free) 3B owner!

Here's a little more detail it's actually the year of engine registery. You can have a 1995 car with a 1991 engine and not need cats.
