With the new online emission tests, the law is tightening, "friendly" MOT testers soon won't have the option to let a car that needs a CAT but has them missing through, not worth the legal implications. I guess most things can be overridden, but most won't do it.

Jamo, spot on with that answer - I remember it from all the hot-rodding stuff I've read in the past.Originally posted by JamoHere's a little more detail it's actually the year of engine registery. You can have a 1995 car with a 1991 engine and not need cats.
Just swapped out mates engine on ovlov with this trick.
In the UK you can theoretically run a brand new car with a big Chevrolet lump from pre-UK-emission legislation and it will be legal.
That's not necessarily true in other countries though! Some prefer the age of the base car rather than the engine.

I thought it went by date of registration of the actual car here too?Originally posted by Keeper of The KittenIn the UK you can theoretically run a brand new car with a big Chevrolet lump from pre-UK-emission legislation and it will be legal.

do you not think they might wonder why a v8 has an i5 identityOriginally posted by BRYSo just re-stamp your head with a 7A engine code and you don't need a CAT. :mischeif:

Depends on the very latest legislation - but what Jamo said was correct and agrees with the last information I received: in the UK the engine was the determining factor.Originally posted by PeteRRI thought it went by date of registration of the actual car here too?
