poor fuel economy

I have been looking & my MPGs for 2 months now & over 300 miles the best I can do is 17 average.
Even If I drive like a absolute fairy I get 22 - 24 max.
I have no running problems temp gauge is always 75-90
No real performance issues (bry says it goes well)
What is a MAF ,Where is it ?
Keeping my eye on this thread.
My friend Has a M3 & from York to Hornsey he averaged 41mpg (what a git)

My replacement MAF was a brand new Bosch unit which was exchanged for my knackered one.. the part number is 0.986.280.137 and cost me £224.

i was thinkin about this last week a switch to press when ya in town or just bumin round to turn off a cylinder surly it should save on petrol,then on the open road all 5 work,
or even better a remap or summat so below say 50 it runs on 4 then above 50,all 5 work.and have a overide switch for crusin at say 70 it turns off one again to save more fuel.

The thing is guys we bought the S2 for what it does and how it does it ,i can accept 17mpg if thats all it will do but if fuel is getting wasted then the problem should be fixed,
Trying to compromise the engine in some way isnt the way to go imho.

Thing is i also Bought the car for what it does btu i dont want it always 100%! when i am stuck in the traffic then i just want a Small car and not an RS2! Problem is i cant have 2 cars so i want the Full RS2 when i want to have fun and a compromised one when i want to have a simple City Transportation Device!

-So if running in 4 Cyl how much fuel can it save and will it do a damage in any way??

-When switching back in 5 cyl mode the the Error that stays in the ECU memory can cause any kind of problem (Safe mode i.e.)! When Running in 4 Cyl the engine will boost as usual and simply have less HP?

-Witch cyl is the best to be disabled??

What does having a Laugh means?

Look at the Chryslers engines (also used in the New Saab Off-Road Type) they are 8 cyl switching to 4 when in traffic and low speeds!

I know it will be not so cultivated in 4 Cyl but if it is a possibility when i am going to think about it!

the ecu could be reprogramed to take the shut down of a cylinder,you havent thought about this fuel savin bit have u,if u save fuel round town then theres more to use in other places like country roads.

do you really think (even if it was possible ) that it would make a difference ? what about the rest of the car it would still weigh the same so you would have a missfiring 5 cylinder running on 4 cylinders trying to push the body which even a 5 cylinder struggles at times

ya i see ya point but round town does it really need to run 5,it must be possible to turn off the injector and plug somehow,i have on probs with my 5pot strugglin at all,my problem is it dont like low speeds.
