I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings and all but Backup Backup Backup
I work in IT and its amazing how often people dont back up till the disaster strikes...and it costs massive amounts more to try and recover the data than to buy a backup drive.
Just get a USB external harddrive to ensure your protected next time

it happened to me a few years ago and I was suprised how quickly my new pc filled up with info again though.....

its a great excuse to go surfing the web all the time for a bit

ps// How the hell did it reinstall on its "own"....it needs the install disk unless it had it on a partition from the OEM.

What make PC is it?? are you quite sure there is nothing recoverable by an "expert" or friendly shop??

Delteing cookies would NOT cause it to wipe windows.ever.!!

He is right, there is no way that you deleting the cookies could cause for windows to reinstall.

      Did the harddrive format?
If not then you can dentally get the data back...

thanks for the input and your so right, i've been meaning get a back up system for ages just haven't got round to it, lesson learnt though, still all a bit baffeled how it wiped and re-installed,im no computer wiz but i also thought i would need a disc to re-install ???? i'll never know.

deleting cookies was the last thing i remember doing before turning off, everything has gone picture's files movies the lot, when the computer turned on it just started re-installing i had to put in usernames, re-install internet softwear, msn messanger

did you try looking through the Documents and settings folder? It could be that all your data is still there but just moved in to another folder.

If you right click on it and select properties you can see how much data is in that file, That way you should easily be able to tell if its still there or not.

You could also try searching your entire harddrive for *.avi or *.mpg, that will then show any movie files still on your drive.

If there really is a problem, I'd look into data recovery. I can't remember what software it was, but could find out, but my bro used it to recover about 1gb of pictures from a drive that was completely knackered (ie, unbootable and couldn't be accessed by simply plugging it in to a spare IDE channel). I was VERY impressed! We even managed to raise some files from the dead after teh drive had been formatted

Agreed. Sounds to me like you have just logged on with a new account.
Go to my computer > tools menu> folder options > View Tab > and tick "show hidden files and folders"

Then go back into my computer > then C drive (usually) > then Documents and Settings > then write down ALL the names of the folders in there and post back here.

Only other possibility is that you've been hit by a "destructive" virus , the end game scenario you describe (if indeed you cannot recover your system ) is common...
