cheers coxy, it's a crazy idea (using a tar remover to remove tar) but it just might work

what do you think about a couple of wee flat spots where i've managed to take the tree sap off? i've clay barred and meguiars waxed and it's not that noticable but when the light catches the bonnet I can see a couple of little patches that seem slightly duller.

If you've got access to a Porter cable or Rotary polisher, then they'll get them out easily enough using an abrasive polish. Alternatively, you could get some 2000 wet n dry on it then polish it up.,

So, can someone explain to me the difference between claying, and using a polish like for example, Autoglym Super Resin, and also the clear liquid gloss coats like Autoglym Perfectionist Gloss.

Why do you also need a wax if you've done a good polish (and that's nothing to do with hair removal )

          Hi Dan,

The clay will remove 99% of bonded contaminants. AG SRP will only take off 50%ish. (very approximately)

AG SRP will remove a very small amount of paint/lacquer too and nourish the surface leaving it shiny and relatively well protected. Its and all in one type product really although it is called a polish because it cuts a little.

AG EGP is a sealant designed to be applied over SRP (and some others) that will cure and form a hard coating that lasts for months. It also gives quite a shiny finish which is better than the SRP.

If you are really keen you can apply a wax (carnuba based) over the EGP for that finishing touch. (Waxes do not cut at all and sit on the surface as last layer of protection and look nice! )

It is hard to describe the differences in finish in words or with photo's, but once you start trying different products you can see and feel the differences. A dedicated wax will give a warmer, richer, wetter glow than an all in one product like SRP...

However the real difference will be seen with good preparation from the start with claying and even defect and swirl removal with a machine polisher...

          Cheers,

          Steve

Polish polishes the surface and Wax polishes, seals and protects it.

The Clay is an easier way of removing traffic film and contaminants off the paint surface.

yeah I went halfers on a nice rotary polisher with dubbedup a while ago. haven't made much use of it though. think it's time to get the extension lead out. what kind of pad do you prefer? didn't like the wool bonnet that came with it. ended up in a bit of a fluffy cloud. car was shiny but covered in bits of fine fluff.

when I get the car finished i think i'll detail the baby, starting with a johnson & johnson soap barring to take off contaminants, sudacreme layered on for protection and a layer of baby oil for shine. I suspect exhaust gases may have tarnished the rear end and could pose a problem but i'll persevere and let you know how I get on.
