Wow just seen this on the BBC news site at work, hope he pulls through.

He was in a car called Vampire trying to break the British land speed record. He'd already done a run of over 300mph when on his final return run one of the parachutes failed and spat him off the runway.
This car holds the current British land speed record which was actually set at Elvington.

        Quote from Vampires web site:
"Vampire is driven by Colin Fallows and weighs 2,200 lbs. The car is 30 feet long and drinks 7-10 gallons per mile of fuel. It accelerates at 0-272 in six seconds and is powered by a Rolls Royce Orpheus jet engine. The car is theoretically capable of 370mph. Colin and Vampire hold the Outright British Land Speed Record of 300.3mph."

Anyway whatever speed it was it's a nasty accident best wishes to him and his family

Apparently he was concious when they removed him from the wreckage, which is a good sign, and over night the medics have downgraded him from "critically ill" to just "seriously ill but stable". Fingers crossed.

Some of you may know i am a paramedic in Sussex and it is not uncommon to anethsetise patients with head injuries in hospital as it makes it much easier to manage the bleed or whatever is going on in the swede and also patients with head injury can become confused and aggitated due to the pressure on the brain. So the fact that he was consious at scene and now isn't is not nessesarily the reaper coming it could just be the neorologists being cautious and hopefully they can then sort the injury and he can start the recovery process.

Sorry if this is too boring but head injuries are quite tricky and i have seen a few! He is a fit and healthy chap so chances are they will fix im. Fingers crossed eh!

Cars going upside down and digging into soft ground are always bad news. Let's hope that Richard Hammond will be ok. Other drag racers have survived 300mph crashes so there is no reason why The Hamster shouldn't, but usually they are on hard ground and do not dig in. Vampire was an old car but it had probably been through many upgrades and a lot of structural tests to ensure safety, and sure enough the cage did it's job as well as can be expected.

                            Get well soon Hamster!!!
