Fitted mine last night and got a k&N filter with it .Is suppose to be this loud.
It sounds like a scoobie with 2 dump valves .i will try my standard filter and
will see if makes a differance.I can even here the turbo spinning up.Going to make a plate
for the bell mouth cause its 4cm wider.

Hi Andy,
Yup, I found it much louder than a stock ABY airbox, but I found that it got quieter when I then added the correct rear light panel that the trumpet connects to....ordered from Steelers for only £7 (just found the sticker from it...called an Air Guide - part number 8A0 805 962 G ) so highly recommended.
I have now lost most of the induction noise, but the increased DV noise is still there when coming off the throttle during boost, but that is not a constant noise so not a problem.
I thought that my car pulled stronger when I fitted the RS2 airbox...wayya fink?
Cheers n

My 'bodged' airbox is a lot louder and in a much better way than a cone filter (which I've tried and it really p'd me off). Mine's got a 4"x3" hole in the front of it with no bellmouth to quieten things down. DV noise is pleasantly audible, as is turbo noise and a lovely 'Golf GTi' burble off boost.
RS2 compatible air deflector will make things quieter but there's a bigger hole to allow freer movement of air and therefore noise! It's all part of freer flow and more power IMHO.

Any pics of a stock S2 box versus an RS2 box?
Want to see what all the fuss is about - is it just the bellmouth that is larger??
Has anyone done before/after tests on these airboxes?
Pete.

From what I've seen / read / heard - Bellmouth is larger and the shape of the airbox is ever so slightly different with more volume above the filter. Plenty of people (Jamo, HPmuirt) have upgraded to an RS2 box and been pleased with the results. It's certainly not cheap though!
I'll get some pics of mine but essentially I've just cut the front panel off where the piddly standard bellmouth enters from just below the filter to the base of the box. The standard shielding is all in place and so is the original cold air feed. It's pretty rough and ready but looks completely stock and TBH must be doing something right as shown in the recent RR day at Solihul. I just love the noise and any extra flow is a bonus IMO.

Yeah I think its a good mod - subtle and effective so therefore gets my vote !
I'd like to do this myself... I already have a Dahlback reacharound induction kit which I would like to benchmark as well - say on some 30-70mph test runs in the same gear on the same day.
I think the Dahlback will be too noisy for my tastes and then there is the heat soak problem unless proper shielding & venting is introduced.
So I reckon the RS2 airbox is the best way forward here. I'll get round to it one day !

As mentioned in numerous prior threads, the RS2 airbox differs in 4 main areas:
1. The air intake port is approx 50% larger
2. The engine side is larger (apparently this helps air flow)
3. The air intake side is smaller (thus external dimensions remain the same)
4. There is less heat sheilding around the manifold bolt and the MAF
There are loads of pics on the forum already, such as
ive noticed better pick up in the midrange ,even 4th is imediate but also done the
thermostat tonight now running 90 even in this cold so might be fueling better.
I aiso sswapped my heat sheilds off the s2 aibox on to the rs2 and it has covered the side totaly including the MAF.
How far can you go HP wise with a RS2 box? I have it on now and it is no limiting factor at this time (~330 horsepower at the mo), but it would be nice to know when it becomes a bottleneck.. (I guess at a certain HP level the turbo becomes so big then the RS2 box won't fit).
