When turning my computer off last night a pop up box poppd up asking if i wanted to "compact my emails", it has done this before and I had had no problems.
Today when turning on my computer I find that all my emails have vanished.
PLEASE someone help me recover them.
Are you using Outlook/Outlook Express by any chance? Both of these clients are known to fall over when you inbox gets too big. I may be able to help you recover most emails if you are using either client.
More than likely you will need to check where your emails have been archived to. It should tell you the path to your pst file in outlook in the settings.
Goto File - open file - pst file and then open your archived emails

the files are .dbx but it won't open, bloody computer's!!! give me an engine anyday
Corey, before you try to recover the .dbx files I suggest you create a backup and keep it safe. That way if things go **** up you can always revert back.
I'll need to have a dig to see how I fixed this problem before.
In the meantime, one way of stopping this from happening in the future is to create a number sub folders in you inbox, then have them sorted by meaningful subject criteria. Also set up filters to move incoming mail automatically into in an inbox subfolder of your choosing. This will help keep the .dbx files to a more manageable size.
I recently had a simailar problem when I had a power pack supply failure on my PC, this caused some problems with my HDD. I normally use the mail system that comes with my BB which is BT openworld, but when my mail inbox and all the extra subfolders I have, become a bit clogged, I open outlook and download them all for safe keeping on my hard drive.
After this power and HDD problem I couldn't view any of the emails that I'd archive because of the .dbx file format for some reason only known the bleedin Microsoft, a quick google search brought that program up and it's worked great.
I just downloaded from this link > > http://www.mailnavigator.com/MNavi111.exe
I have version 7 of OE, but program says it works for version 6.

That seems to work (in a fashion) but how do I get them back to where they were before I turned my computer off last night?
Sorry if it sounds dumb but I only know what I know, engineering, Audi's and hp!!!
Isn't there just a button I can press and it makes it all better???

Ignore the DBX viewing program you installed on to your PC for now as its not needed for this procedure.
From the Outlook Express menu select Tools | Options | Maintenance and click the StoreFolder button. You will see a dialog with the name of the directory that has your mail files.
OK. Make a note of where the .dbx file is that contains the archived data
If you look in that directory you should find files named after your mail folders and news groups. They all have a .DBX suffix. Outlook Express keeps all messages in these database files. And these are what you should back up to CD regularly in case your Hard Drive dies
If you know the .dbx has been archived to a different location. Rename it if it will conflict with any of the dbx files in the Store Folder Location and copy it into this store directory (Ctrl + C when the file is highlighted to copy it...then Ctrl + V key to paste it into the store directory.)
To Restore it..
Select File > Import > Messages.... Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and press Next > Select Import mail from an OE6 store directory and press Next > Now on the next screen Browse to the location where your message store is (you wrote it down right?!) Select the Archived DBX file (whatver name it is) and click Import, and your messages "should" now be transferred.
Make sure the properties of the archived DBX file are Not set to read only....right click > properties > and untick the box if read only is ticked and then click apply // Note: If you do ever make backups of these .DBX files after copying them off a CD or wherever they must have the properties set to writeable as they will all be read only when they are copied off the CD initially)

post back afterwards if you are still having problems
Thank you for the helpful (and very detailed) response but I am sure I am doing something wrong, either I cannot identify the archived location or I am not doing it correctly.
When trying to import the files it comes up with a message "No messages can be found in this folder..."
I wish I paid more attention in IT class at school rather than dreaming of quattro's but it was one computer for the whole school back then.
Sorry to hear you're having problems Corey, the best advice I could give anyone is NOT to use Outlook at all. I've been using Eudora for the past 10 years and never had ANY grief with it, ever!
