    BIG BLUE 1200 tonne crane

Had to do a presentation on cranes at work and used this video to show what cutting corners can do.

The crane was only supposed to work in 17Kph winds but they were getting gusts of 25Kph even though the average was 15. The result the king pin which is the 2 bangs you hear has sheared--It is 2 foot diameter high tensile steel and it shears like a carrot In the distance you can see another crane with a man basket in, these were the people coordinating the lift, and they died as well as their crane driver-they were 500M down the road.

Sheesh...It must have taken some massive forces to shear that kingpin..
You wouldn't have thought 8kph of wind gusts could be so crucial

Does not sound like there was much safety factor in that design!

The roof apparently only weighed about 150 tonne, but the reach is what made them need big blue, the gust only pulled the roof about 4 feet but it was enough to side load the pin and shear it.

these crains are real monsters, i have been working in Egyptian cement factory when we had one 1000 ton crane. it was very impressive.

I just got home from a week in Dubai and they may not have the biggest, but it is certainly true that they would seem to have most of the worlds cranes....makes a very odd skyline....
