    Cautionary tale

On a serious note, I was driving home from Birmingham last night, after a day at the NEC for Autosport International - very tired, I had stopped for a break earlier in my journey home and thought I was fit to go again.

    I was wrong.

I fell asleep at the wheel and glanced off the barrier on the way home (Fanny the Golf now sports some redesigned bodywork on the driver's side).

I was very very lucky, I could have drifted left and down a large embankment or even through a gap into oncoming traffic. Either way I know I could have died last night.

Tiredness really is a killer, don't do what I did, have a proper break and make sure you're safe. I won't be making the same mistake twice.

I was lucky this time, the worst that happened was a bit of damage to sheetmetal.

Thanks guys, and yeah you're right - I never though it would happen to me. I was amazed really at how easily it happened, one moment I am aware of all that is happening, the next I am bouncing on the central reservation and bouncing off the armco. Needless to say that woke me up in a big way.

My dads mate did a similar thing a few years ago. He fell asleep (he's a workaholic) in the outside lane, and woke up in the hospital. Apparently he cleared all the lanes on the motorway, exited the hard shoulder and went straight through a brick barn in a farmers field. Very lucky in all respects
