Can those members who run the 80 Tdi's with the 1Z engines as second cars report any problems with using Vag Com on their vehicles. Would be useful to know what version and interface you use too!
Thanks!
The 1Z can be a right nightmare to get VAG-COM to talk to. It uses a dodgy variable timing protocol and quite a few leads won't work with it.
I've had mine working with a serial lead on most versions of VAG-COM and I now use a VAG-COM HEX-CAN USB lead with version 514. I got latest my leads from ECUtool.com.
I've not managed to get a standard USB lead to work with either my TDi or MattS2's. We've tried two laptops and neither one will do it.

Thanks Ben!
Actually being trying to communicate with the 2.5tdi five pots(100/A6). Neither seemed to like the serial or USB leads I have got! I know this era/type of tdi is flagged up as difficult but I knew others had been successful! Frustratingly I think MartinJS used an ebay cheapo version

You've let the cat out of the bag :mischeif:
Great lead, I have the same after advice from the "Diddy"
I've got the 403 lead. It's basically a copy of the genuine interface, right down to way it acts as a dongle to unlock VAG-COM.
Obviously I don't condone such business practices but if it saves me money then I don't really give a monkeys who made it.
I've also got the IMMO reading and dash insert adjustment leads and software from them. Not much use on the S2 or the TDi but perfect for the newer cars that occasionally come my way.

Ok cheers guys!
Looks like the way to go then! Strangely the first attempt with the serial lead did communicate briefly then got the hump!
Pretty sure the ecu is dying to tell me something obvious that I have overlooked!
Hi mate so did you just download the free ware from vag.com ? and then use with the chinese copy lead, did this allow full functionality of the free ware?
Cheers

guys im having problems connecting my vag com to car. it can see the port, it can see the interface, it just cant find the right chassis type for my car, the list does not show s2, and i got sick of waiting after 20 minutes in the cold while it searches every single chassis type to match mine.
I have a 2.5TDI 5 cylinder (140) and i think the pump timing is out a bit. I have been told that once setup/new belt fitted you can fine tune the timing still. Is there a software programme available to do this?
