Yep! Vag Com!
It has the ability to check the timing. The problem is these mid 90 diesels (80&100/A6) are difficult to connect to without the proper (i.e expensive) Vag Com interfaces made by Ross Tech. Whilst its nice to save money when you can, to save days of frustration it might be policy to stump up for the proper interface. If you use it a few times you will have effectively got your money back by not paying someone else to do it. Who knows, you might make a few new VAG friends.

How much is the Vag Com interfaces made by Ross Tech?

No! The timing is determined by the pump position. Vag Com effectively tells you the dynamic timing and whether it is within the accepted tolerence.
