Just spoke to my Dad who's had to abandon his car in the centre of Brum. We've had sweet FA all day here, can't believe we all live in the same country!
I had a terrible time getting home from work last night.
What I realised quickly was that with the quattro I had drive but with the tyres I have I had not much ability to steer or brake.
Was alright till I got to the thin steep downhill lane I come down into my village.
made it so far down (crawling at tickover in first) then it just went, started picking up speed just slidding down the hill . I had to keep blipping the throttle to sujest directions of drift to it to try miss the walls and eventually managed to slide into a bit of the edge of the road where there wasn't a wall and stop.
I think I travelled around 400 yards in this style.
Problem then was any further down there wasn't any edge to the road just walls and trees and it gets a bit steeper so opted to go back up.
Crazy that I managed to do a 6 point turn and have the traction to get back up the hill using the edge of the road all the way and still setting off sliding backwards a few times.
I think I need to think about a set of winter wheels and tyres at some time in the future.
Never had any such problems in my Audi 80 2.8 quattro and used to go crazy in that in the snow so can only put it down to the tyres.
******, ah well maybe next year. Just glad not to damage my baby

I found ABS to be the worst thing invented for snow. Where i lived was in an estate with a steep road out of the estate on to a main road. In First gear at 1500 revs the car would just break free on the glass ice and start sliding, the ABS wouldnt allow me to lock the wheels and try to get a build up in front of the wheels so the car traveled on down on abs. Straight across the main road twice--brick it--oh sure brown trowsers time. Going up was a hoot, quattro laughed at it with a bit of squirming.
But should never have to wory about that now it was 36 deg.c today
