I don't know about what is available in the UK but in North America, connector boots for OE coils on AAN engines (same ignition system as on the ABY and ADU) are about US$4.50 each. On that basis, I would only recommend electrical tape as a "get me home" solution. See link to one US supplier:

If you use an old fashioned coil tester, which tests the coil's ability to jump a given gap, you can easily track down which coil is the weakest, i.e. the one that jumps the smallest gap. Such testers are under $10 so I would think under L 5.
Point taken to some degree but how realistic is that test with the engine just idling ? I haven't tried your procedure but as I do have one or more sick coils it would be a nice investigation. Spose a spark is just a spark that and its only the weak ones which lead to misfire problems under load... mmmmmmmm

Thanks for all of your reply's, there is much "food for thought" Today i took the spark plug cobver off and found that some if the wires going to each coil had small cracks in them, i taped all the ones i could see individually with insulation tape.
I drove the car 40 miles today and it did not miss a beat once, i kow what ive done is just a short term cure.
As suggested in a couple of the reply's i did notice the rubber boots that connect to the spark plugs on a couple of boots were cracked at the very bottom, like the idiot i am i left them, i will tape them tomorow.
Can i buy these individually, if so where is best to buy them in the UK

Once again thanks for all of your help it is much appreciated.

GSF or VAGparts for the boots, but yes those cracks in the wires are tell tale signs... It is such a shame that the S2 coils don't have modular wiring like the 18T items as I think the wiring is a big part of the problem.

Spark plug connectors on their own, £25 + vat each from VAGparts.
Coilpacks (which come with a new plug connectors) £370 "including VAT and P&P" for all five. Marty at VAGparts gave me a little discount because of the fellow AOC thing, but also gives discount to S2forum chaps too.
You have to do some wiring, but not a HUGE job. Took me a couple of hours, though I did take the opportunity to completely renew all the heat proof sleeving (improving as I went)
Just my opinion, but there was no choice for me to take with regards buying replacement OEM or using parts not designed for the job.
Old coilpacks had 140k on them and 11 years old, yes they were in a pretty bad state, but still, 140k and 11 years I can't grumble.
Also didn't want to have to run with the coilpack cover off, or have to replace umteen 1.8T coilpacks, chasing part number revisions etc.
As said, just my opinion, eveyone has their own preferences when it comes to maintaining their cars.

Marty from VAGparts did a handy wiring diagram and I have some pics of the old coilpacks I removed in this thread >>>> here..

L 25 for one boot? From VAGParts? That's terrible.

You can get 10 boots from the US for about L 25 from FAP99 (who also has OE coil packs for about US$114 each - with boot).

Somebody there should go into the import business and/or do a group buy.

                    But that's just my opinion.
