You are going to get a biased view here... So I'm not sure what you expect to see !

Shall we say the 'culture' and 'attitude' of Audi S2 owners is somewhat different than your stereotypical Imprezza Turbo owner.

Both cars have similar capabilities when it all comes down to it. The scoobie has more exotic 4WD transmission - all great if it doesn't fail. Actually the Audi is just a better built car all over with many of us on starship mileage now without any engine wear or transmission problems to speak of.

In standard trim the S2 is perhaps a little underpowered for its weight compared to the Scooby so it doesn't maybe feel as zippy. However, a software upgrade on the S2 readily adds another 50bhp and 50Nm into the equation and that makes a noticeable difference.

Overall handling of the S2, partly due to its older age, is going to feel less 'sporty' and hard than a fresh scoobie... but stiffer suspension components, better dampers and lowered springs are readily available if you want them. Also the S2 has an open diff front and rear which contributes to the generally safe understeer characteristic that it has on the limit of traction. An LSD is available for the rear (from the Audi V8) which changes that behaviour of course. Torsen in the centre is just about bomb proof so no worries there and there is little point in an LSD at the front unless you are on mud/gravel/snow. The S2 transmission is 100% mechanical - no electrohydraulic computer controller nonsense. I prefer it that way.

Brakes are the S2's biggest weakness in standard trim, but the assembled masses here have developed a number of bolt-on brake upgrades front and rear to solve that problem for not much money... Using off the shelf Audi & Porsche parts.

An S2 can easily get into 350-450-550bhp and beyond if you have the will and deep enough pockets.

Some might say the S2 is a bit dated and boring looking - sitting alongside a WRC lookalike scoobie... But that is its strongest point in my eyes... None of the same attention from thieving scumbags, from plod or anyone else who isn't in the know. A healthy S2, even in standard trim, can quietly embarrass a *lot* of much newer so-called sports cars and the owners are left wondering - WTF was in that old Audi ?

There's not many folk consider both cars side by side as most people have an obvious attraction to one or the other.

Ask the same Q on a scoobie forum to see the response you get !

What Paul said goes for me.

Where I used to work there were loads of lads with Jap metal. After a few upsets a few of them asked me "What the **** is that?"; they were subsequently educated. Their main comment about the Audi was that it was "too boring"; "exactly" I said "I don't want to drive something that stands out."

This is what I think really is the differece between a true Audi fan and a Scoobie fan.

I have only just sold my weekender which was a 22B impreza (thats the two door WRC model complete with wrc wide arches etc, number 214 of 400 built). That was very exotic and had the equivalent of a group N gear box and was running 296bhp. Beautiful to drive on the right day, on the right road and fantastic track day car but tiresome after long spells and not a good motorway car at all. Those who knew 22B's knew that they stood out over 'normal' impreza's but for the mass they just looked at it as another impreza!

I'm going to fight the other corner here - I'm on my second scooby now and have driven an (R)S2 and as much as I thought the RS2 was a top-notch car, it just didnt have that rawness, that immediacy that a scooby offers.

While I'll admit that the S2 is a better built machine - dont let the scooby horror stories put you off, it is a very reliable, very well-designed machine. Most of the blow-ups you hear about are people who havent got a clue how to look after a car or people thinking they can run an import the same way as a UK.

I've had two of them now taken past 100K miles with out any problems!

Its the noise that really annoys me, they sound like a turbo charged VW beetle

                      Rawness and immediacy = Scoobie
                      Sophistcated and deliberate = Audi

100k? I've walked further without any trouble. Nothing to be proud of IMO.

The only thing you can say about them is f*****g ugly every one of them ,up in my corner they all have 12inch exhaust pipes ,you can hear them coming a mile away and they are all driven by prats They may be fast but if you stuck a 2 litre turbo in a wheelie bin so would it

Scooby versus a URQ would be a much better comparisson IMO as the S2 was a VERY limited rally/rallycross car. Plus the UR is much more rigid than the S2 from a chassis perspective. S2 is a autobahn and wet road supercar killer and the URQ is a rallycar with a heater...

One day i'll have both the s2 and an original Quattro sat on the drive

Actually Dave has hit another nail square on the head - a good point well made... just a pity the original UR had barely 200bhp but the driving dynamics of the UR are a little sharper then the S2 in stock trim.

On the downside for the UR I gotta say its looks are rather dated now... still an undoubted classic of course.

If I had to have three Audis on the drive it would be an RR, S2 and S8. The RR and S8 are at opposite ends of the scale and the S2 is the right middle ground for me in a 2-door Coupe. The S4, S6 and Avant variants are prolly the middle ground for those with daily 4/5 door needs.
