    Weird insurance quote

Had a look around for some S2 quotes the other week – just on Confused.com, nothing too in depth. Best price I could find on an S2, fully comp, 6k miles a year was £390 from Elephant. Most were between £400 & £500. Had to re-insure my Pug today and asked my insurer – Stafford Knight through HiC “insurer of high performance and modified cars” if they could do me a quote for an S2 as it would be easier for me to keep my insurer than cancel and start a new policy.

    “Had any previous quotes sir?”
“yes, about £400 but I figured that you would be cheaper as you specialise in performance cars etc”
    “Right sir”
    Couple of minutes pause….
“we are coming up quite expensive..”
    “Really? How much?”
    “£1,200 sir”
    “£1,200?!?!??!”
“Yes – our cars are grouped from 1-40 and an Audi S2 is showing as Group 46…”
“Are you sure that you have S2 and not RS2/4/6 etc???”
“Quite sure sir, Audi S2, 2.2l turbo, 1994”

    WTF?!??!
    1990 Peugeot 205 1.9 Turbo 192bhp - 190lbs/ft
1996 Vauxhall Omega 3.0V6 Ex-Plod - cop motor, cop shocks, cop brakes, cop LSD. Cheap, tatty and comically sideways!

Insurance groups have changed this year from the old system of 20 groups (with 1-18 for normal cars and 19 & 20 for exotics, inc the RS2) to 50 groups.

A stock S2 was group 18 in the old system. When I re-insured mine 2 weeks ago, it remained at 18 on the new system. I questioned this and was told that not enough were shown on their stats to help them place it on the 50 group new system. (never before heard of an insurance company being shy to take a punt at putting prices up).

For comparison, an Audi A4 2.0 TDi was group 14 on the old system and is group 26 on the new, so ironically it is now higher, than a car that the old system classed as a supercar

Over time, I am sure that the S2 will rise, particularly if people like Ross keep hitting brick walls (sorry matey ) and I would expect it to end up in the mid to high 40's, so maybe you company are just quicker off the mark. That said, the overall price should remain the same (plus of course the annual 20% increase that these sharks manage to add every year )

      Cheers n

P.S. I paid £350 (ish) 2 weeks ago for 8000mile/year, drive parked, social & commuting, lightly modified, £150 excess, fully comp protected.

I got a good quote through Adrian Flux (for me anyway - I'm 22), with all mods declared, unlimited mileage and sat on a driveway, not garaged, only £575, fully comp.

HIC are useless for Audis, try Greenlightif you want track cover, agreed value etc. and Adrian Flux if you don't. I'll be going with Greenlight this year, £570 with agreed value, track cover, modifications insure etc. etc. AF want £540 but don't offer agreed value or track cover.

The guy did say that they review their prices every 24 hours so that may explain why. Still sounds excessive to me. Fortunately the Elephant quote is valid for 60 days! Might give Greenlight a go. Would be surprised is they can beat £389.55, especially as I have a central London postcode and it's parked on the road.

I'm with Admiral. I was with Norwich Union, but their off-shore call centre just got on my T1T$

Elephant were even cheaper, but I have heard bad things about them (although that is true of all insurance companies ) and MORE TH>N were the absolute cheapest, but what I have heard about them cannot be repeated without being censored.

                              who was that with Aaron?
I have a slight issue in that i've only technically had one of those license things for 2 years. Failed my test when I was 18 and didn't do it again until I was 28 (only had 2 minors against my speed. that was close). Until then I just nipped to the shop in my brother's car or went to get him when he called in the middle of the night to say he was ****** with no money and couldn't get home.
thank god i'm 30 cos I don't fancy paying £1764 like Sonic. Elephant quoted me at about £600 or so.
