There are a couple of projects on here that are going to be all out track cars. If you have a look at the projects section.

In Norway all S2s are track cars more or less. Depends if you want to do it the easy way or the FIA way

Add brakes, suspension and proper seats for a bit of weekend fun, or go all out with a stripped shell, roll cage, fuel cell ++

          Here's another nice project

S2 as a track car is a good plan! Depends on your budget but I'm sure that a fully sorted 3B with track suspension would come in at about £5k-£6k with approaching 290bhp, fully track suspension, 996s, 3"turbo back and some decent seats and harnesses, roll cage would be extra if you feel you need it with harnesses. ABYs are more expensive, heavier but are capable of more power as standard due to coil packs, stronger box etc. but are still 10-13 years old so expect to get replacing stuff if you're going to thrash it! ... but they are listed as heavier and I personally think the 5 speed is better for sprinting with 300bhp or so due to a longer 3rd gear, much more will cause the box to wear quite quickly.

                  Do it! Do it!

For any full-time track project I would strip the car clean first of all unnecessary items and trim. This removes a lot of unwanted weight and clutter. Then fit a full roll cage - avoiding it is just taking stupid chances. This adds weight back into the shell of course but it also adds an immense amount of rigidity to the chassis - that means better handling !

Andy is right about the cars weight being a problem - a decent power increase to circa 300bhp and 500Nm is required in my opinion for serious track fun. Beginners (like me) could start with less performance... Its only the best drivers on certain tracks in the right conditions that can make full use of (say) 400bhp and 650Nm so don't go crazy with silly power targets.

For most tracks you will want minimal lag, maximum traction and a fair degree of adjustability on the setup. To help increase performance, and reduce lap times, there are two things required - faster acceleration and better deceleration. Reduced weight will help on both of those, but its important to know where best to remove the weight for best benefits... A properly lightened bottom-end along with single mas flywheel will make the engine rev more freely (accelerate faster). Couple that with lighter wheels, brake discs and any other rotating mass.

Big brakes will be needed - guesstimate of a minimum upgrade to 314 or 323 fronts with 996 monoblocks.

As for suspension adjustability - you generally want to be as low and as hard as possible for dry tarmac, but its not as simple as that in the real world. I'd go for a fully adjustable setup from somewhere like KW and couple that with adjustable ARBs... Adjustable brake balance is also very useful when the weather is changeable.

Getting back to the weight thing - yes the 6-speed 01E is a bit heavier than the 5-cog 01A but the ratios are fantastic for spirited driving and it is a LOT stronger than the 01A. The best 5-cog box would be an 016 from a 20V or Sport UR quattro - mighty strong and not as heavy as 01E.

I'd go with the ABY engine as a base seeing as there is an easier path to RS2 performance levels (and beyond) when required. Its not impossible on the 3B - just more work really.

What 5-spd box is fitted in a '86 10v UR out of interest, and what power will it handle (mated to ABY engine)?

Its not power you wanna worry about - its torque... many a modified S2/Rs2 runs around on 01E boxes with an excess of 650Nm without issues. The older 016 box is allegedly stronger - there are many varieties and some oddball gear ratios along the way.

There are also 016 boxes which have a lockable (open) centre differential which is preferred by many for loose surfaces as the rally cars ran with a locked centre all the time. Circa 1987 I think the UR got the Torsen (LSD) centre which is not lockable - this is equivalent design to what is on S2/RS2.

I'm no UR anorak but I think the earliest URs (WR engine) had the lockable centre - thats 1980-1985. Then came the MB engine (still 10V) and it had the Torsen centre from 1987 (ish). From 1989/1990 came the RR engine (20V). Oh and there was the short and ugly thing along the way that has the strongest box of all 016 - this type was used by a certain Kim Collins on his heavily modified shorty dragstrip/hillclimb blaster. I heard that he rebuilds the gearbox once a year.

If you got really lucky you would use an Audi Sport version of the 016 box as fitted to the rally cars - this has straight cut gears, much better ratios, stronger bearings etc but its gonna be a very expensive and rare item.

I'm interested in this idea of an S2 as a track car, as I was planning on using my one for this once I get it all sorted out a little more. Does anyone have opinions on wheel sizing for a track oriented car? At the moment I am running 19's, which are far too big and was wondering whether I would be better off with 17's or 18's, personally I'd like as small as possible, but I'm not sure whether 16's would fit over my 323mm front discs.
