IMHO and also from reading lots on here, usb on any operating system and aftermarket vag-com lead = BIG no-go.
If you are going to go aftermarket lead, go for a lead with a serial connection. That's assuming you have a lappy with an old serial port. I bought my laptop specifically for vag-com, so that meant "old and cheap" and it had a serial port.
My lead came from an american guy based in China. It's a dual K line OBD11 standard cable with a seperate 2x2 connector for pre 1996 cars.
Unfortunately the seller no longer exists and hasn't for a couple of years.
This is the type I have >>>> Linky
Just searched that on flebay, so NCTS etc.
Vagcom will work just fine as the unregistered shareware, but if your ECU throws more than one code, it'll only explain the meaning of the first one, the rest are just the code numbers, you have to look up their meaning. Output tests work on shareware, but datalogging doesn't.
Mine is fully registered and I've yet to come across a VAG car that I can't pull codes from (lastest was an 06 MK5 Golf GTi and an 07 v10 S6) apart from the hitachi ecu'ed 7A engine and a select few ACE engined 2.0 16v's.
I've never heard of a problem with the officail ross-tech vag-com USB leads and getting them to run. Must be something to do with aftermarket cables.
Jas..
