You can tell what fuel a car has been running when it gets pulled apart-
various engines over the years (road and race)
Shell is by a long way the best fuel for keeping the internals clean.
you have hardly any work to do as there is minimal carbon/gunk build up
You can also tell when supermarket fuel has been used by the amount of crap in the inlet & exhaust ports!
Very difficult to gauge hp increases with fuel-but optimax/V-power keeps the engine cleaner so there will be no loss in airflow due to carbonising etc.....
If you are running supermarket fuels- try a couple of tanks of V power, boot it and watch the **** come out the exhaust!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problems with tests like that is unless they change the fuel tank each dyno then it's not 100% due to cross fuel contamination.Leave a comment:

this is interesting stuff BUT (and i could be wrong) i always thought the real benefit from a higher RON fuel comes when the ecu automatically adjusts the ignition timing to suit. So, i'm guessing the S2 would be advanced enough to do this but what about us lowly 7A's and KV's??? Can anyone shed any light on this??
I always use higher RON fuels in my KV as i beleive the standard timing on the dizzy is designed for 98. But like i said, i could be wrong...Leave a comment:

Tescos 99 is the biz. It's one of the official Rally fuels for the UK. I've used it in my V6 and she loves it. She also loves V-Power though, but not any of the silly half-arsed 97 fuels (what's the point? cars were either built for 95, or 98, so why supply 97??)...
We can't get either on the IOW right now, just a local station that sells Texaco 98. I'm lobbying Tescos to bring it over when they rebuild the store soon...

Tesco have been doing this a while - perhaps 2 years. There have been garages dotted all over the country doing it. But in the last two weeks my local Tesco just got it!
The 99 RON fuel's made by Greenergy and is 5% bioethanol, has a good load of detergent additives and is a very clean petrol. (According to their website.)
The S4 seems to like it and it's 2p cheaper than V-Power, which is all that matters to me.

John Thorne has done extensive tests on these higher octane petrols, results can be found at link below. Personally i use Tesco's super 99 and V-Power every 3 or 4 tanks, i know of people who have used BP 102 but that is only for track days and the stupid cost doesnt really reflect performance gains..

I'm not sure if all V-Power is 99 Octane actually - I put some in my A4 a few weeks ago and it was actually pinking under full load - that's just rubbish! It could have been a dodgy batch of course, but I've never seen that with the Tesco 99 stuff.Leave a comment:

You'll need more than 1 tank but essentially that is correct, shell petrol has the best cleaning additives in it.
AAH+ took his injectors to be cleaned and the company said they could tell from the injectors which petrol has been run on the car as shell petrol keeps the injectors in a better state then supermarket and other fuel.Leave a comment:

My 1.8T loves the 99 RON Tesco juice, nippier, breaking traction on corners easier and about 4 mpg more!

Optimax used to go off never had the problem with V-Power. In my neck of the woods Shell is the cheapest petrol even cheaper than super markets.
V-Power always goes into the Avant and it does love the stuff
