  • Gas tank touch up question.

I did a quick touch up on the bottom of my gas tank last night. As you can see I left out the part that has an axle leak. I figured theres no rust underneath that.

Im at the point where I would like to touch up the joint/ pinch portion of the gas tank. Is this something worth sanding down, metal prep, priming, then painting ? Or should I leave it?

I generally like taking 80 grit sandpaper to it first.. To make sure the wire wheel doesnt destroy it. ( Which is what I did with the bottom portion of the gas tank )

Some rust discoloring remained.. But hopefully stopped it / slowed the rust down for the most part...

Also, does anyone know what I could have used to remove axle fluid off the tank? Gas I assume?

If wire wheel will destroy it, it is already scrap metal.
Next time use some rust converter, then wash primer, then epoxy primer and then paint it.

Probably any decent degreaser will remove the axle fluid without a problem.

Here amost all C4 tanks have started leaking by now.

If I decide to use rust converter. Is there something I need to do first? Like sand paper, or metal prep? Or even windex?

I really just wanted to use sandpaper, and prep it good. But this area looks pretty volitale.

Hopefully it isn’t bad enough that I need rust converter. At that point I’m taking it to a professional. Because I doubt I’ll be able to find another s6 wagon tank in good condition ..

Even when you’ve sanded and or wire brushed there will still be small amounts of rust in the pores of the steel.
This will come back and bubble up under the new paint.
So you need to wipe it over with a rust converter product, these are usually based on phosphoric acid I believe. Trustan, Jenolite etc. are a couple of names.
You will see the areas where there is hidden rust change to a kind of purpley colour which means the rust has been converted. You then wipe off according to the instructions with the product and prep prime and paint in the usual way.

Okay thank you for the advice. Sucks that I might need to sand down what I painted to hit the black rust spots with some converter. Will I have better luck with a wire wheel? Or sanding the fresh primer / paint off ?

Do you think I should try and sand down that rusting lip/ pinch? I’m very temper to, but do not want to further damage it.

I understand it’s at my discresion. But I’m not familiar with how thick those pinches are. Or how important they are.

          Thank you!

If you are worried about damaging any thin metal, you can soak the tank in a rust remover chemical. I use Bilt Hamber detox. It's great stuff and will remove all the rust without any mechanical action, leaving only clean metal ready for paint. I'm sure you will be able to get it over there but will need a big tub!

Big tub or use bilt hamber deox-c Gel. Like the liquid but paint on with a brush and it sticks to your rust area without sliding off. Wait for chemical conversion and wash off.

Things got worse when I took off exhaust and examined the other side.
