Hmm, so I need to connect a LED there and check blink codes?

Forgive my ignorance, but is it just a case of connecting some cables on those two points and plug the other ends in the adapter cable of the code reader?

Vagcom lead will only work with the late 7a ECU (4 pin connector) not the earlier 2pin ECU connector.. if its the early one then your only option is blinking LED morse code

              Yes mate,
To the white plug you connect the K and L lines.
To the black one you connect 12v and chassis ground.

Ok, clear mine is the 2-plug 7A so only blink codes then.

Thanks John, not too hard to connect those then, if this doesn't work on my 7A I'll see what is involved to make the blink code tester.

                    Thanks so far guys.

Small 12V bulb or LED and some solid core wire

                        No resistor needed?

depends on the LED, some have built-in resistor to make them suitable for 12V.

I should really check for fault codes on my 7A CQ even although (touch wood!) it's running well..........plenty of information above. Thanks chaps.

Haven't had the time to try to do any fault code readings yet as the car needed work for the MOT which is run out by now. Failed the second MOT attempt today as well as lambda value is too high, already changed the probe as I tried to fix the engine running issues but no luck there. Tried a second hand one though as that's what I had laying about, maybe a brand new one will get it through the MOT? Not putting too much hope in that one as nothing so far really helped.

Check your engine earths are all ok, they can cause poor running if dodgy or missing. A strategically placed jump lead from engine to battery negative terminal can rule this out quickly!
