  • 1996 S6 Avant Automatic For Sale

This is my car, a 1996 S6 (C4) Avant Auto, now up for sale on Autotrader.

It’s Nogaro Blue with matching blue Alcantara and black leather interior which, to my eyes, is by far the best interior/exterior colour combination, unless you have very conservative taste, in which case I’d direct you towards the C5 Series. If you’re interested in a cheaper way to get at least a bit of that RS2 Avant experience, or want a slightly softer and larger alternative to your RS2 on those days when you need to take it easier, have a look here.

I bought it in November 2010, 6,000 miles ago, as a stopgap whilst another car was being restored. I got to like it so much that I hung onto it but, really, I should let it go. I live in London and most of the use it’s had recently is around town. It’s a blast, but averaging less than 20 mph it’s wasted, and urban fuel consumption is certainly not its strong point. It was obviously well cared for throughout its life, has never been modified and presents very well, though does have a couple of dings, some small areas of peeling lacquer and a couple of small (non MOT failure) chips on the front screen. There had also been an odd area of peeling paint on the bonnet when I bought it but, last year, a guy obligingly slowly reversed into me in a filling station, denting the bonnet enough to warrant a replacement, so now it’s perfect. I fitted ContiSport Contact3 tyres after 1,000 miles and they transformed the handling, which had been ‘interesting’ on Pirelli P6000s. The original Avus alloys are good but do have some, unfortunately inevitable, parking scuffs from irregular London kerbs. Other imperfections are :
    • The climate control needs to run for 15 minutes or so before the controls can alter the settings, after which it’s fine. It’s been like this since I bought it and it’s never irritated me enough to fix. A new control panel is £200 ish, I believe, or you can maybe find a salvaged one.
    • The rear washer stopped working last year. I’ve not investigated (but it doesn’t just need topping up!).
    • The heated passenger seat works, but not the driver’s.
    • The light in the dashboard gear selector repeat display doesn’t work.
    • The locating bolt for the spare tyre (space saver) is missing, so it hops up when you go over sleeping policemen too quickly.
    • The under bonnet view is marred slightly by peeling chrome on the strut bar.
    • The wheel centres would look nicer with some black paint re-instated.

Other than that, it’s had an oil and filter change in my care, and a general check of brakes, etc, all at an Audi specialist, but no full service, though it’s currently running as well as ever. There is history with the car, showing a timing belt change at 93,000 miles. It’s a hard car to value, since there aren’t that many around, especially in original condition. The automatic box actually suits it, particularly if you’re a left foot braker. The asking price is now £2,950. It's located in Balham, South West London.

Looks nice, what's the current mileage?

Is it a plus spec model, with the black bits and bobs?

    It has plus spec wheels...

The mileage is just over 121,000. You'll find more photos and details if you click on the link to Autotrader.

I believe the wheels are original, but of course I can't be sure. There will be more expert Audiphiles than me here, but I thought that all Plus spec C4s were V8s. This is a 5 cylinder. The interior trim is that shiny German wood veneer, not carbon fibre.

They are not 'Plus' cars but Plus spec cars on the late UK 2.2T cars...

Well some of the bits are plus spec, but not all the V8 Plus spec bits...

I’m no great lover of automatics myself, and I’m sure an auto RS2 would be silly. However, although the autobox means it’s saddled with ur-Quattro technology and does without the Torsen diff, it does rather suit the S6. It’s a big car and the 5 cylinder in that state of tune (and don’t even think of boosting it towards RS2 outputs) means that it’s easy going when you want it to be, without ever feeling lazy.

When I see easy, can a manual box and surround be bolted in>!!!

I think you’d end up with a lot of work, hacking around the floorpan, sorting out the ECU, etc and, even then, I don’t know how much else you’d also have to change, bearing in mind that the auto didn’t have the Torsen set-up of the manual. I know I should be doing the hard sell, but this is really for someone who’ll appreciate the auto which, from my experience, really does suit the larger C4 bodyshell and the 5 cylinder in the S4/S6 state of tune. By the way, it’s now ‘only’ £2,950 since I ought to get rid of it but, really, if I don’t, I probably won’t be that disappointed. In fact I might be quite pleased.

Seant, look around in the forums, the swap is doable and not a rocket sience - BTDT with my UrS6. No "hacking"required, minimal differences between the auto and manual chassis.

PS: The automatic 4hp18 did have center torsen setup like 01e manual cars, only 4hp24 of the V8 mode had the plated/cluch type centre differential. In the end it's not that relevant as the torsen sits in the gearbox witch would be changed to 01e anyways when doing the manual swap.

Zoig. As mentioned above, I’d only intending keeping this for a short whilst another car was having a bare metal respray. I’ve developed a real liking for the C4 but, since my car interest lies elsewhere, and since it’s been so trouble-free, I’ve not had have enough time to find out in depth about it. As such, I’ll happily defer to greater knowledge on this excellent forum, but I’m a bit embarrassed about the Torsen confusion since I’ve owned the car for a couple of years and I know I’d read this at the time from Wikipedia.

“Audi's quattro four-wheel-drive system was standard on the C4 S4/S6; a first-generation Torsen-based system which used the "T-1" automatically biasing centre differential (ATB) was used on vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, while a transfer box based system was used on vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission.”

And before you say it, I do know not to believe everything I read on Wikipedia!

As regards the auto/manual swap, I remember reading a while ago someone advising against the amount of work involved in much detail but, as you say, everything is do-able and excellent work. I was thinking that the manual had a Torsen rear diff, but I see that’s not so on the 2nd generation Quattro.

As i explained the Wiki quote about transfer case is based on the V8 box, 2.2T automatic has Torsen in it

Great S6+ spec car that is, best variant of the 2.2T that LHD cars never had.
