I love my 99 facelift A4 2.8. Bought it as a stop gap..... had it over 18 months now!

As mentioned, the torque is only an issue if say you try to pull onto a roundabout or take a junction without bothering to change down, you find yourself below where the torque is. But after a few seconds it comes on cam and its off again.

Yeah you have the ACK 193BHP lump.I have one too, that is a 43,000 ACK lump. Superb engine! The off torque bit would be the same with an S2 in the wrong gear.

          That's a different engine, 30v as opposed to 12v

Yes but remember i have both and drive both the extra valves gives a better lower down torque and adds 19bhp over a AAH.doesn't sound much but the way the engine feels is chalk and cheese! The 2.6 feels much more like the 2.8 30v ACK.

Looks like a nice old coupe, but not worth £3k to me.

12vs are ok, but not a patch on a 20vt.

If thats true Andy how did IOLAIR see everybody off up your neck of the woods??! I drive both 2.6 and 20vt back to back daily and yes 20vt is great when you stir it but the fwd 2.6 isn't pissed all over buy the quattro S6 at all. Of course the S6 has the edge but the 2.6 is a very underestimated power unit. Have you owned an as new one Andy,or even a B5 fwd 2.6? If you had you would know what me and Janis are on about.

Perhaps it was the 4wd eating up my 2.8s power, however you slice it though over 9 seconds to 60 from a 2.8 litre engine is abysmal.

On the face of a AJM 1.9TDI sounds abysmal with only 115bhp but in the real world it aint. Can be a very quick car across country with a decent driver.

Not the engines fault but the fault of a very heavy Audi. Try telling Mk3 Capri owners their 2.8i V6 cologne engines are shyte.

An 10V UR is only 200bhp ish, and the 12v has a much smoother powerband, on the road it will come down to whoever is willing to push their car more.

A chipped 20vt is 280bhp, 400+NM, that is significantly more than a 12v, and has loads more torque in the midrange which is where the 20vt is so effortless.

                        A chipped 3B is 5.4s 0-60, 12.9 1/4@110mph

A 12v is significantly slower than that.

No I have never had the privilege of owning a new car, but do have experience of 10v, 20v, 12v, 16v, 20vt audis. Been out in a 30v as well.

Normal day to day use there is little difference, 12v possibly has the advantage tipping into a roundabout at 100rpm, same with going quickly cross country, however driven hard the difference is huge.

I guess a stock S6 and a front wheel drive V6 80 become a lot closer in terms of weight/power?

Dont get me wrong I think they are nice, under appreciated cars, but as there financial value increase, their value to money to me decreases.

Yep. Those valves make a hell of a racket after 150k! Changed the oil twice in my ownership and tried a flush the second time but no quieter!

                            A 2.6 12v is 150bhp, 225NM

                            A 2.8 12v is 174bhp, 250NM

                            Stock AAN (KW and NM)

                            Stock 3B

And 7A as that came up earlier

Also with a 20vt in good condition you can get 350bhp for about £1500.

Well yeah, a moped with 10hp is great fun and will out run most things down a canal tow path, about as relevant

Top man Andy! And there lies the desirability of the I5 20vt the immense tenability of the engine not to mention the power delivery even standard. Mmmmm very nice feel with the Volvo turbo and 350bhp.

So 2.6 at 225nm is 166 ft touqe so 9 more than 7A plus the 7A is a very
peaky engine and needs to be revved at 6k rpm to achieve 162 BHP
