    1.9 tdi erratic idle

I know its not an S2 but gimmie a break coz i dont have a clue about diesels, do these engines have some sort of isv device like the S2? The idle on mine is hunting quite a bit at idle, so much that the whole car rocks from side to side sometimes lol.

try changing all the vacum hoses. it costs you close to nothing, and the result can be great.

Agree with Skull that it's worth checking the vac hoses as the go very brittle with age. Also the boost hoses tend to go soft.

What TDi is it? If it's an 80 TDi like mine you can tweak the fuel quantity at idle with Vag-Com. Did this on mine and it made a world of difference to it. Although I need to do it again since my ECU was changed.

Have you tried welding the EGR valve open?

You can find the info on altering fueling here.

I got rid of the EGR by removing the pipe and fitting blanking plates each end. You can get them from ebay for a couple of quid each. Search for Landrover EGR blanking and you should find some. There don't seem to be any cheap ones on there at the minute though. You can get them from 4x4 specialists as well.

Makes a world of difference to it. I've also changed the N75 and it pipework as thee pipes were brittle. It feels a lot stronger and smoother.

Had to do the fuel pipes this week as the return line rotted through and was leaking diesel everywhere. It's a common fault on them so worth looking out for.

            Skull,

My car has had a replacement engine. It is from an early car but has the later (smaller IIRC) turbo and fuel pump from the original engine (car is a 1995 model year).

Thanks. I've got a problem with the vehicle speed sensor at the moment, the engine wont take any load below 2500rpm and kangaroos down the road, speedo kept loosing its signal, when it did the engine ran ok so ive disconnected the speedo now till i can get a new sensor. How much are these sensors Ben? and how can it cause the engine to run like crap? I cant understand how.

Just had a look at the workshop manual and you are correct in that the vehicle speed sender can affect performance. These diesels are strange beasts!!

The speed signal is required to ensure that the air conditioner compressor is switched off when accelerating. It is also required for the cruise control system and to ensure smoother driving (jolt damping).

The speed sender is about £20.

While we are discussing diesels can anyone confirm that the 1Z can have cruise control activated on it? According to the workshop manual it can but according to the family album it can't

And the brakes are pretty much useless lol. G60's and 7A disks should fit wont they?
LMAO, only had it a week and already on about mods.

Brakes are a bit poor. I've G60's and V6 discs planned for mine. They are probably the same as 7A.

So far mine has had a new back bumper, body coloured mirrors and handles and full 4 door electric windows fitted (MattS2 and myself can now strip and rebuild an Avant back door in under 10 mins )

Next on the list is alloy wheels, leather interior and cruise control.

                      hi
                      i got diesel avant....l reg
running g60 with s2 front hubs and discs
                      rear has solid A4 disc
makes world of differeance to braking

in front use audi 80 front drive shafts from v6 they use same type of inner cv joints....to gearbox

this conversion also lets you have a bigger choice of wheels to wear

s2avant: i got cruise control in my car and i have installed it by myself. the only issue is, it can be fitted only on the latest 1Z engines with (the ones with 202nm torque, smaller turbo, LMM on the boost hose...)

i also have s2 brakes on, and discs from an audi coupe 2.3 quattro 276x25

john881000: tell me a little more about this drive shafts and s2 hubs. how have you done the rears???
