Audi 80 TD, 82 hp, something like 5l per 100km.

I used to have a 1990 80 TD, was about 85hp from a 1.6litre. Full tank got you 550miles+

Was no ball of fire from a standstill but its ability to overtake was surprising. I actually really miss that car

Not really the place to mention it but what about a Rover 420 SLDi? Cheap as chips, will run on a veg oil/diesel mix, plenty of bits around for them and quite comfortable if a little boring. I ran one for over a year and it never went wrong, also, a £60 tuning box will give you 130bhp. Pretty well specced too.
