only 1.9. if you buy a v6tdi, buy 2 piece. when you can use 1, the other can stay at the mechanic. the 2.5 v6 tdi is a thief on 4 wheel.

I have a 1.9 a6 avant, great car, still plenty of zip for such a heavy car and easy 600+mile per tank on a good run.

Its not been the most reliable machine though it had to be said, complete rebuild at an eye-watering £2.5k 40k miles ago, various niggly leaks and handily the clutch sheared off the aircon unit before xmas

Having said that, as i understood it, the 2.5ltr version spring oil leaks which are expensive to fix and it you are tempted to open the throttle the mpg falls away significantly.

The 1.9 115bhp pdi version is apparently quite complex to work on compared to the later 130bhp unit as the injectors have a special cam.....and this can wear quite a bit.

I'd personally go for the 1.9, you get good everyday performance and excellent economy, of and road tax is only £115 due to low emissions!

      Cheers

Oh yeah oil leaks - I know a song about that. Got both top gaskets to do on the 2.5TDi - lots of disassembly required to get near the boogers and I'll bet the sump gaskets are sweaty too. Theres a trend here alright...

More oomf and zip with the V6 diesel for sure, if you need it, but costs more to run of course. For a daily driver doing short runs the 1.9 is better I reckon. Hindsight is 20:20

          Must be getting old.

Got a TDi 130 here too. I managed an average of 55mpg on a trip to Stansted and back, cruising at about 80 most of the way, 5 up with a stack of luggage.

So my "grannying" style at 65 with the trucks and numpties in the inside lane should see loads of mpg!

              allways more

work on the lovely v6 engines then the 4pots, but so mutch more fun to drive. The oil pan is not that big a deal on the v6, its more of a doodle on the 1,9 ltr, have to lower the front "bit" to get it out, and then you should do a wheel allignement after that.

Fantastic reply’s guys, thank you all, I will now go for 1.9 (130) hopefully as the car will be used as everyday runner and occasionally for long motorway trips, my circumstances have changed a bit and fuel economy is important.
                Cheers

How do you know which is the 115 or 140 bhp model? I'm looking at one tomorrow (today) with 103k on the clock and need to go there armed with facts to get a good deal. the guy is asking a lot for it (1.5gs) and i need to get it for a good price if it's worth going for? If it is the 115 can it be sorted to get 140 or is it not worth it?

1500 isnt a lot for it unless its knackered, infact thats cheap(if its an avant). The poxy 115bhp doesnt have a red i after the td.Yes, the 115 can be sorted quite easily with either a chip or a add on powerbox.Uneven front tyre wear is a possibility due to worn bottom suspension arms but they are cheap to replace, have 'heard' of worn gearboxes but mines spot on and its done 156.000.Climate control can give problems but simple enough to check. You wont regret buying one they are the b0ll0x and will do 40mpg without trying.

injectors nozzles and ecu map are the only differences as far as i know plus i have heard the pistons on the 115 are not the same but a 39bhp increase wont matter i wouldnt have thought, i will dig out the chaps name from my pm's for you.
