    Audi 80 1.9TDi - No laughing...

... anybody got prior experience on these ?

Just want to know if there is anything special I should look out for when buying one.

WHY (I hear you ask) ?

Cos for the 1st time ever I am faced with a driven commute where somebody else isn't paying for the petrol. That and I don't want to yomp a lot of miles on the S2... and I really need it off the road this winter for some long needed TLC.

I figured on the 80 TDi as they are dirt cheap to buy and run, have the bullet proof suspension (versus the balsa wood construction of the 'nicer' A4), and are wonderfully anonymous looking and unattractive to scumly thieving types who might be lurking where I have to park it every day...

Don't even know the engine code yet - its 90bhp right ?
I have no clue what ECU it runs so I dunno if it can be chipped or not...

Did the 80 TDi come in Saloon only or was there an official Avant also ?

yep, came as avant and saloon. Main weakpoint particular to this engine is the airmass meter. Can be chipped with impressive results ( for a 1.9tdi) and improved mpg, but smokes a bit more. Try and get the se version for obvious reasons.
    Nice one

I have been looking for a cheap 80 TDI avant as my commuting car and one to chuck muddy bikes in the boot - but there just is not very many around - and the ones that are around are absolute dogs - I don't care if it has done sky high miles as long as it has been looked after. Being up here doesn't help either - they seem to be very rare.

Look out for a missfire as this is normal the pinical injector N' 3 ( the one with the wire to it!!) as this gives the injection pump the point of injection and it will cost (£180 at last perchase!!) MAF sensor need regular cleaning if faulty will give low performance as if turbo not boosting or hesitation- try cleaning with carb or contact cleaner before replacement,

Good to tune and very reliable- make shaw you replace the timing belt and tensioner as its the tensioner that gives up the ghoust and destroys the lot!! other wise the same as a S2 e.g wishbone bushs etc...

I just bought one, so far, so good, 45-55 to the gallon, drivin style pending. SE is defintely worth gettin, mine has the same steering wheel as my S2, but without badge, and quite sporty seats which is a result!!

Can someone remind me what to use to clean the MAF, and where/how much it is to get it chipped??

(P.S Engine code is 1Z, but there are two variations of the 1z I belive, each having a different cam belt tensioner, and I think they are all at 90bhp when they left the factory, but they doo have a nice amount of torque!!)

Roo, clean your MAF with Carb cleaner which is readily available from motor factors, Halfords and most motor shops. Or you can get Isoproalcohol (IPA)

and give it a bath, either way, be careful of the fragile coil wires.

The MAF is a flapper unit on these cars so they usually don't have any problems...

They do run a very early Bosch DDE (Digital Diesel Electronik) system with 2 87C257 chips, and they can be tuned up to 115HP AFAIK. Never done one, it's too old technology for me.

The ECUs are also very very very ESD-sensitive, so watch out when opening it, I know of a couple people who have ruined ECUs just by opening/touching them. But I know Paul has an ESD mat so you'll be ok

Ok you got me. I have a 1.9 tdi. I have some of the problems you mentioned before, but they are close to be solved. 180nm of torque is ok, but... gotta be chipped (the intercooler is stock, small but...) I have 310.000 km and running, maybe it "drinks" 1dcl (maybe less) of oil every 5000 km, so the engine is great. consumption is 7L on 100km (hard driven). Thumb up!

                          Paul,

the 75 horse is a slug, the 90 horse is miles better and pretty good on fuel. They are damn rare though. Now if you could find a Golf Estate TDi.. there's a another story, amazing power (grunt) to weight on the TDi not TD, and incredible fuel consumption, good stuff

So I want the 1Z engined Audi 80 TDi circa 92-94. There's a couple of saloons advertised locally going for well under a grand so I'll get looking. Pity they never did the 80 TDi in quattro - I'd really prefer the 100/A6 2.5TDi Avant quattro (6spd) but its much more money and very rare also.

Yup late 1Z is perfect and under a grand is pretty cheap. Those 5 cyl 100/A6's are great, only 30 really to the gallon on average. they always attracted hyper mileage and they still hold a good price now. Amazing car...
