  • Need some parts for my dagdag

It's and 80 TDI avant with auto box

I need a third injector, the one with the wire. Want to try replacing this before going for the fuel pump.

Basically the car hunts badly at idle and feels like it should have more go.

Also a rad as there's a water leak, but it's an auto so has the oil cooler built in.

Please keep us posted on your progress.
    My avants hunts also.
And the previous owner disconnected a wire somewhere that has something to do with the speedo.

The hunting is most likely caused by the fuel pump. It's common on these, mine had it and my dad's had it for years too.

It can be adjusted out with some patience and a steady hand...

I thought it was swarf build up or something on the magnet?
As for the speedo I'd put money on the speed sensor, AFAIK this can be linked to the hunting, unplug it and it goes away i think
I also have a full set of injectors and pump if needed, also a load of other 1z parts if you need anything else (car was a manual so rad no good?)

What you're experiencing is "chugging" which is a reasonably high frequency or lifting and dropping of revs caused by underfuelling. and it can be adjusted manually on the pump with a bit of patience.
The image attached shows the screws that need to be loosened to adjust the head of the pump, moving it towards or away from the cam belt will adjust the fueling.
Dont loosen the screws much, you want them to be loose enough that you can tap the head with a soft mallet to move it a fraction, but not loosen so much that diesel spills out of the seals everywhere. this is where a DTI (dial test indicator) is useful if you have one it will allow you to see if you have moved the head and how much with each tap.
Note the image shows one screw that goes through all the layers of the pump that is a security bolt, i removed this on my pump and replaced with a cap head

The car will chug more when warm. so the way i adjusted it was to make a small adjustment to the pump and then use the car for a couple of days. Its easy to know when you have it right, underfuel and it will chug at idle and in extreme cases not start. Overfuel and youll get clouds of black out the back when you give it all the beans. Funny but not all that wallet freindly..
The best way to do it is get it to the overfuel stage, and then tap it back to reduce the smoking...

I hope that makes some sense,
Unfortunately i cant remember which way is which....

                    Good luck

^^^^ Definitely good to know does it have any relation to mileage?

That will adjust iq, this can be checked and slightly adjusted with vagcom. With vagcom, my iq was all over the place at idle due to the swarf, once cleaned it sat stable and could be adjusted..

If the iq on the car isn't set right it will run rough as you say but its not the only cause.

^^^ Thats true, i forgot this info because my vagcom wasnt working with my 80 tdi, but you can monitor the iq with vagcom whilst doing the manual physical adjustment too, it would make it a lot more easy to quantify.

Also worth checking what it is before you start. From memory, it should be about 3.5 to 4. Mine jumped from about 3 to about 7 before it got sorted.
