    Vegetable Oil and a TDI

Anyone tried vegatable oil in a VW/Audi TDI?

Or any links to info on doing this?

I was just wondering how well it ran and on what mixture of oil and other stuff. Is it a good idea to run 25% diesel 75% Veg Oil?

I would recommend putting 1% kerosene based white spirit or similar with the oil. 50% mix would certainly be fine. I think Diesel has a few added beneficial additives, so you don’t want to lose to much of that.

Make sure you pay the duty on it. Its only pennies and it makes it completely legal!

Oh - and your car will smell like a mobile chip shop!

Heating oil is not a bad option, it's basically the same as diesel, but less tax. It's less likely to congeal than Vegetable oil. But then, I’ve got a big oil tank outside for heating the house. It’s less work than disposing of my friends waste chip shop fat. But maybe more expensive.

I assume 1% white spirit is only if you are using 99% oil in the tank?

So 75% oil and 25% diesel will be ok?

It was just out of interest to see how well it ran - that is why I wanted to know if there was any specific problems with the Audi TDI engine

                  That's right Doug.
You could always add a small amount first, to check if your TDi likes it. Then slowly step up the mixture. See how it runs, smokes, performs, etc.

I might try it then - I see you can get tank heaters and preheaters but this must be for crap oil that goes gloopy when cold. I might experiment with some "safeway savers" to see if I notice any differnece in performance etc.

My mate chucked veggie oil from the supermarket in his Pug 206, and ran it for a while with a few large containers of the stuff, never having much in the way of problems but he did say it smelt like a fish shop. I think if you mix it with diesel (he ran mostly diesel, but chucked this stuff in when he was skint, so 50/50 at the most) you should be ok.

If it didn't blow a French car up a German car should be fine but reading up on the subject is always good. His car was a 2.0 hdi 90hp, so fairly modern, not sure if that makes a difference.

Not much of this biodesiel is happening in NZ. Is it gaining ground over there or still an underground activity?
