I am not totally sure on this, but it may be that the ecu only dumps it codes when the ignition is switched on. Maybe just using the red and black leads on the reader turn ignition on may get the ecu to dump it codes?

Can i damage anything by plugging the code reader into the sockets the wrong way or will it be safe?

I cant see any harm in just connecting the red and black leads up. The LED with simply light up or not. You wont be shorting anything out.
