Howdy all. Since I received quite a lot of interest on the (infamous) Justin Olson flange I just sold, I thought I'd model it up before I posted it & see if you lovely people fancied a group buy?
I'm a mechanical design engineer by trade, & machined stuff is part of my repertoire. If there's enough interest, I'll send out an iges to my favourite machine shops for quote.
I don't own a 20v car, so have just made a carbon-copy of the flange at hand. From measuring the runner register recesses & seeing some of the pics on various forums, it would appear to have been designed around the following parts:
seems like an expensive way of doing it, but like I said, I have no car to use as reference to check clearances etc.
If anyone has used one of these flanges & has feedback on improvements which could be made, I'll happily include them. I've seen quite a few different IM builds over the years, & feel it's probably about time someone did it right & made them readily available.
*Update*
The Ross Machine method of having separate 3" dia velocity stacks was bugging me, & seems like a very inefficient solution. So I've made a one-piece plenum baseplate with inlet rads machined into it, & locating pockets similar to the original JO flange. One of the criticisms I've seen of the JO flange is the small (3mm wide) weld shoulder, so have increased this to 6mm on the new plenum baseplate.
I don't imagine the cost of my baseplate will be that far off of the cost of 5x RMR velocity stacks ($39 ea.) + shipping + import duty + material + welding time to make your own base plate.
I'm going to look into sourcing flat-oval tubing locally. The RMR stuff is a bit of a faff!
Anyhoo, check the screen shots out.
cheers,
Ben

To save any newly interested parties from having to read the whole thread, here's the pricing info from page 2:
Anyhoo, here are the numbers for my JO replica flange:
1 off £500.00
3 off £380.00 each
5 off £320.00 each
10 off £290.00 each
To make it significantly cheaper than those flanges already available from other suppliers I would need something like 20 people to buy one.
Here are the costs for my plenum baseplate:
1 off £250.00
3 off £190.00 each
5 off £160.00 each
10 off £150.00 each
All prices quoted above include VAT, & because the machine shop is about 15miles from me, I'm happy to go collect the parts when they're done.
So, can any seriously interested parties please reply on this thread with the quantities of each part they want, & the country they'd like them sent to? I'll have to get back to you all with postage costs as it'll obviously vary depending on whereabouts you hail from. It would be good to get a reply that looks something like this:
Head Flange x 1
Plenum Baseplate x1
UK
Any lurkers or secret squirrels out there can of course PM me, & I'll just add the extra numbers to my running totals on this thread, so everyone knows where we're at.
Oh, one final thing: does anybody want the end(s) of the plenum baseplate to be rounded? See attached screenshots. These would obviously have to be quoted again.
