    Arp

Hi there guys just received my ARP headbolts just a quick query there seems to be a issue with the washer that are supplied with the head studs from what i read on he search area.
can you guys plse confirm one way or the other if it is wise to use the sportquattro washers p/n 035 103 377 with these head studs, or are the standard washers fine
because i few of you guys are using these bolts so if anyone knows you guys will

Doug_RS2 uses the sportquattro washers, good enough for me if good enough for MRC.

I've been using mine with the ARP washers for 1 1/2 years with no issues. Head has been off since they were fitted and there was nothing to suggest they cause problems. From memory the Sport quattro washers have a slightly larger diameter, however nobody has problems with the standard washers on the OE S2 headbolts, and they are approximately the same size as the ARP washers The only issue I can see, would be if you used ARP or similar bolts with the OE torque values.

I like Tom's quote in his post....."I opted not to use them in the end. I guess i was working on the assumption that i never want to pull the engine apart again"

I use them with the supplied ARP washers too, I've had the the head on and off about three or four times since installing them (yep really!) and each time I have checked the head for damage around the washer seating area....none.

These studs have paid for themselves easily by now, great, useful piece of kit.

well, my arp dig into to my head, changed to spq items, and no more digging.
std washers are bigger than arps, cheap solution is use washers from your old std bolts.

65ft lbs to torque them down follow the factory sequence. Warm the engine up then retorque them again to 65ft lbs, do not undo them just retighten. This figure is only applicable if you use the ARP moly slip.

Just been trawling through old threads and forgot I posted this.

Time for me to do a big U turn, the last time I had the head off again (not long after that post), I found that the ARP washers had sunk into the head on almost every stud, in fact a few of the bolt holes on the exhaust side had actually closed up a little where the ally of the head had been displaced slightly.

I dont know why they did it that time as they have always been torqued as per the ARP specs.

Its a good head with a lot of work put into it so I had to have the area that the washers sit on re-machined flat and got some SQ washers from VAGparts, hopefully all is OK now.

Still think that the ARP studs are great but I'll make sure I'll continue to use them with the bigger washers in future.

                      Cheers

Interesting Mark, the head is coming off when I do the engine and gearbox. I'll take a good look at the head to see if the same has happened to mine. I wonder if this issue has been reported to ARP?

I just sent them a note and referred to this thread.

Why doesn't ARP supply the kit with the right (or best) sized washer anyway?
Or are they supplying some universal stuff?

I'd say it's probably a combination of cost/efficiency and ignorance. Once they know about the problem, their response will be the true indication of their merit.
